Samoan Group
Any student can join the Avondale College Samoan Group. The year begins with five to six weeks of preparation for the Polyfest competition in March, with practices every lunchtime and after school from 3.30pm - 5.30pm. We have a great tutor team made up mostly of past Avondale students.
The Samoan Group enters nine categories of competition:
1. Ulufale - Entrance
2. Ulufafo - Exit
3. Mauluulu - Mainly female standing dance
4. Pese o le Aso - Themed choir - song
5. Fuataimi - conductor
6. Sasa - seated dance involving both females and males
7. Taupou - single female/male dancer
8.Taualuga - finale dance including the single principal dancer
9. Togiga - uniform
We are allowed to have 60 students on stage and four musicians. The timing for the whole bracket of items is 20 minutes. The performers must incorporate the theme that the host school sets for all schools.
Being part of the Samoan Group is a huge commitment for students, but a very rewarding one.
