Phillip and Ethan: Best in New Zealand

It has been a great end to the year for Avondale College's athletics squad who have just returned from the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in Wellington with two golds, two silvers and two bronze medals.

Head Boy Phillip Wyatt capped off a superb year by jumping his way into winning no less than three medals – a gold and two silvers for his events of triple jump, long jump and high jump.

Year 10 student Ethan Sorrell also won gold for his high jump event, and bronze medals were awarded to Milan Pickering for Senior Boys shot put, and Luke Fielding for the Year 9 boys 3km road race.

For an athlete to win three medals at a national athletics event is an impressive feat. “It was pretty unexpected,” says Phillip, “I hoped for a medal but I didn't expect to win one in all three events.” His three medals represent three personal bests, with a distance of 14.33m in the Senior Boys Triple Jump, 6.94m in the Senior Boys Long Jump, and 2.00m in the Senior Boys High Jump.

For Phillip, cracking the two metre mark in the high jump was a fantastic moment. The event was the third on his schedule, and followed a physically exhausting day jumping in both the triple jump and long jump events. “I knew it was my last event so I gave it everything mentally, and came back with another personal best.”

Phillip was also selected for the New Zealand Athletics Representative team. The next six months will see him focus on his jumping, with the hopes of competing internationally. He then intends to begin a Commerce and Property degree at Auckland University.

For Year 10 student Ethan Sorrell, winning a gold also meant jumping a personal best; he reached 1.87m in the high jump event. He had been putting in some serious training prior to the event, with his Roskill South Athletics Club coach, Chris Trabbing, “I'd been really hoping for a gold,” says Ethan. How did it feel to win one? “Awesome.”

Ethan's medal also tops off a great year. Not only has he done well in the sporting arena, both in athletics and football as part of the College's Sports Academy programme, but academically he has excelled as well, coming first his class for Music, Media Studies, Health and PE, and Science, as well as maintaining an A* average in his accelerated IGCSE mathematics class. This was recognised at the college's Junior Prizegiving when he was awarded the Andree Janif Trophy for the Most Outstanding Year 10 Student in Academic and Co-curricular Activities.

Putting in many quiet hours behind the scenes at Avondale College is teacher-in-charge of athletics, Geoff Haigh. Geoff has been taking the athletics squad to the National Championships since 2006, when there were only three members in the team. To see it grow to a highly motivated and successful squad of 26 this year is a tribute to the work he has put in to organise, support and encourage the students. “They were good fun to go away with.” says Geoff. He is delighted by their success, and especially Phillip Wyatt's triple tally. “It's amazing,” he says. “It's extremely rare to get three medals.”

It was Avondale's most successful national athletics meet ever, with the squad of 26 winning six medals and ten top-eight placings overall.

Fa'amu named in NZ tournament team

Congratulations to Year 11 student Fa'amu Ross who has been selected for the New Zealand Secondary School Netball team. This is a particularly outstanding achievement as the selection is made from not only all the teams who compete at the Upper North Island tournaments (32 teams!) but also from all those who played in the Central and South Island tournaments as well. It's a huge achievement for Fa'amu – she now joins the ranks of other ex-Avcol students like Rachel and Grace Rasmussen and Georgina Solomon who have gone on to make netball their career...

Fa'amu co-captained the Premier team this year, and received the King Cup for Most Improved Senior Netball Player at the Sports Awards Dinner.

“She was our star Goal Defence,” says Teacher in Charge of Neball, Mrs Maureen Aldridge, “Absolute poetry in motion when in full flight.”

Sports Report

Water Polo

The Junior Girls team had a great win on Sunday night, beating Mt Albert Grammar School 6-1. Caitlin Mann, Te Kura Parsons-Grace and Reese Gleeson played well in the field and Jahmal Beckmannflay had a great game in goal.

The Junior Boys played their first game of the season and also came away victorious against Mt Albert Grammar, winning 14-2. Cisco van Rijk was outstanding as centre forward, scoring nine goals, and the team also had some great play from Reed Hallet and Luke Fielding with Luke netting 4 goals.

Lacrosse

The Premier Boys Lacrosse team played Mt Albert Grammar School on Friday night. The game was well attended with plenty of support on the sidelines for the Avondale team. There was a lot for them to cheer about too, as the Avondale boys won 11-6 with Tim Brebner scoring six goals, Elvin Alfaro three and one each from Jimmy Yang and Sean Siddells.

Upcoming Events

There are a number of events coming up in the Sports Department as senior sport winds down for the year. Sports Team Photos should be available for viewing and ordering by the end of term. Photos will be put up on the Stadium noticeboard and order forms will be available from the Sports Office.

The annual Sports Dinner Prize-Giving will take place on Friday 4th November. Tickets will be available before the end of term from the Sports Office. It is expected that all students who have played in a premier team this year will attend. All other senior students are welcome as well.

Sports Results Week 6

Representative

Congratulations to Lolo Onesemo, Epoki Tauki’uvea, David Etuale, Simon Auva’a who were all selected to the Auckland West Under 16 Rugby team. Congratulations also to Tusi Eti, Frank Tuiloma, Tyler Guttenbeil, Alex Cortesi, Isaac Pese who were selected to the Auckland West Under 14 Rugby team.

Basketball

The Greater Auckland Basketball Tournament took place last week in which the top two teams in each of the four zone competitions play off for the Auckland title. The Avondale College Under 15 Girls, Under 17 Girls and Under 19 Girls teams all qualified for this tournament. The Under 19 Girls were the first team in action and they swept through the qualifying rounds, beating St Kentigern’s College, Massey High School and Rangitoto College to qualify for the semi-finals. The Under 17 Girls lost their first two games, but came back well to beat Sancta Maria 43-24. Unfortunately the two losses meant they did not qualify for the semi-finals. The Under 15 Girls beat Westlake Girls 48-33 before losing a nail-biter to Mt Albert Grammar 44-45. However, a win over Macleans College was enough to qualify for the semi-final round.

In the Semi-Final, the Under 15 Girls team faced off against Massey High School. At the start of the 4th quarter, things looked bad as Massey had a handy lead. But, led by Lavinia Solomon, the team rallied back and took the lead by two points with seconds remaining. A foul as time expired meant that Massey High School had two free throws to tie the game. With ice in her veins, the Massey High School player sank both shots to send the game into over-time. Avondale played well in over-time and were able to control possession and come away with an unlikely victory.

In the open grade semi-final, the Under 19 Girls team comfortably beat Lynfield College 35-17.

Both the Under 15 and Under 19 teams will play in the Greater Auckland Final on Friday 16 September. Good Luck!

Lacrosse

The Premier Boys Lacrosse had their game against Michael Park rescheduled due to the Rugby World Cup opening.

Ultimate Frisbee

The Avondale College teams had done very well to position themselves in the playoffs of the Auckland Ultimate Indoor League. Unfortunately the finals night clashed with the school show, meaning many players were unavailable for the finals. Those that were there on the night put a great effort in to cover all of the games. Avondale 1 lost their semi-final and then the 3rd/4th playoff against Takapuna Grammar 1, and so finish in 4th place. Still a great effort considering this is the fist year Avondale has participated in the Ultimate competition. Avondale College 2 won their first play-off game, but lost the second to finish 10th place. Avondale College 3 lost their first playoff game, but finished the night on a high, winning their last game against Takapuna Grammar 2 9 – 6 to claim 7th spot. Congratulations to all of our Ultimate players on a great season.

Road race champ!

Congratulations to Year 9 student Luke Fielding who came first in the Junior boys division of the Auckland Secondary Schools Road Race. A sprint start saw Luke lead the field of 84 from the beginning, and he won the race with six seconds on the second place finisher, a fantastic effort!

Sports Results Week 5

Basketball

The Premier Girls had their last game of the season last week, and saved their best performance for last. They beat St Cuthbert’s College 82-60 which means they finish 7th in the Auckland Premier League and have a chance to stay up in the league in 2012 pending a playoff at the beginning of next season.

Lacrosse

The Premier Boys Lacrosse team won a closely fought match on Friday against Auckland Grammar School. The scores were tied at 8-8 after full time and overtime was needed to find a winner. Avondale came through to score the winning goal to take the game 9-8. Tim Brebner had 6 goals.

Netball

It was finals day at the Waitakere Netball Centre and Avondale College had 6 teams in contention for titles. The Senior C team had a bye in their competition and had to wait on other results to see where they finished. They ended up Runners-Up in the Senior Grade 2 competition. The Junior Premier team took on Lynfield College for the Year 10 championship and emerged victorious 36-25 to take the title. The Year 10A team lost their final 20-31 to St Dominic’s College to finish Runners Up in the Year 10 Grade 2 competition. All three Year 9 teams were involved in finals. The Year 9A team played out an epic final against Massey High School, with the scores at fulltime tied at 24-24. Massey managed to score the winner in extra time to take the title, but the Avondale girls can hold their head high after an exceptional season of netball. The Year 9B team also lost their final 14-23 to St Dominic’s with Emma Rose-Owens named Player-of-the-Day. Sheerti Kala was awarded the most improved player award, while Lesieli Kaufanga was named MVP for the season. The Year 9C claimed the Year 9 Grade 4 title with a 20-17 victory in the final against Marist 9 Blue. The coaches awarded the whole team player of the day as all of the girls deserved the title after an fantastic final.

Ultimate Frisbee

Avondale 1 won both of their games to set up a semi-final match next week, which will be followed immediately by the final. Avondale College 3 narrowly lost their quarter-final match 5-6 which puts them in the playoff for 5th-8th and Avondale College 2 won their last game of the night to give them a shot at 9th place in the competition.

Hockey hitting the mark at Avondale College

The future of hockey at Avondale College is looking bright as the impact of the high performance Sports Academy programme begins to make itself felt.

Hockey coach and Teacher in Charge of the Sports Academy, Paul Smith, is excited about the progress being made by young hockey players at the College.  He points out the Academy sets a platform for exceptional performance through a dual focus on great coaching as well as sports theory and education.

Says Smith, “In contrast to some other Academies, we don’t just run the kids ragged on the field – they are doing theory as well, with Year 10 students doing NCEA credits early through the Physical Education curriculum.”  In addition, the students participate in motivational sessions with SPARC sports ambassadors and have the opportunity to visit and train at the Millenium Instutute of Sport and Health.

It’s a High Performance attitude that seems be getting through to the students. Says Year 10 Academy student Rushlee Pearce, “I joined the Sports Academy to improve and perfect my skills. It has taught me that to be a top athlete you need hard work and dedication.”

This focused approach is clearly paying off.  Paul Smith’s Under-15 boys hockey team, which is mostly made up of Sports Academy students, currently ranks third in their Auckland A grade competition. They are more than holding their own against the other top private schools in the upper ranks of the competition, and are the only side to have drawn with favorites Kings College.  Four of these junior students also play for the Premier team, and will be travelling to the national tournament later this term.

One member of this junior team is Academy student, Mitchell Murray. Mitchell is also currently playing for the Auckland U15 team, and his older brother, Jake, has just returned from captaining the Auckland U18s to a gold medal victory in the U18 national competition.  Both boys have been identified by Hockey New Zealand as future Blacksticks, and have been given specialised programme of fitness skills and nutrition to help them achieve their potential.

Jake also plays for the Avondale College Premier team.  Coached by Bevan Jones, this team is also doing well in the Auckland competition. They were promoted to the A-Grade last year, and narrowly missed out on a top four finish this season.

With the Sports Academy hockey programme only in its second year of development, the future looks bright for Avondale hockey. Says Smith, himself a former England representative and currently the Assistant Coach for the North Harbour NHL women’s squad, “These kids want to be there. You really push them hard and you see the positive results you get from that.  I’m loving it.”

Trials for the 2012 Sports Academy intake will be held on November 4 2011. To apply for the six codes on offer (basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball and rugby), or for more information contact Mr Paul Smith: smp@avcol.school.nz

Sports Resport Week ending 14 August

Basketball

The Premier Boys Basketball fought a closely contested battle against Dilworth. The boys needed the win to keep their hopes alive of making the semi finals, but unfortunately Dilworth had other plans in mind winning 89 – 95. Highlight of the night was Charles Epati scoring 32 points. On Friday the Premier Boys team went down to St Kentigern’s College 87 – 101 in a gallant effort. Avondale had the lead right up to the 3rd quarter but St Kent’s came back, took the lead and then ran away with it. The coach was very proud of the boys for hanging in there.

Football

The Boys 1st XI lost to Long Bay High School 0-1. For the second week running, the Boys 2nd XI put in an excellent squad performance lead by Keith Picardo as captain. A special mention for Nathan Henry, Gian Pimental and Jiten Patel all from Year 13 playing their last home match of their Avondale senior soccer participation. Player of the day was deservedly given to Jiten Patel.

The 3rd XI Boys beat Green Bay High School 1-0, while the Year 10 Boys took a 1-0 lead early on against Massey High School, but couldn’t hold on it, going down 1-2. The Year 9 Boys had two matches last week. The first was a knock-out cup semi-final against Mt Albert Grammar. The first half was very close, with the score at half-time 1-1. Mt Albert dominated the second half and ended up winning 8-1. The score was not a fair reflection on the team’s effort, which was outstanding. In their Saturday match, the Year 9 Boys lost 0-4 to Macleans College.

The 1st XI Girls lost their 5th & 6th placed match away to St Kentigern's last Wednesday on penalties. After a massive effort with a number of first choice players unavailable due to injury or NZ representative commitments, the team managed to be level with St Kentigern’s College (1-1) after extra time but lost on penalties (4-1). Special mention must go to the remaining senior players such as Ashley McCullough and Danica Maclean for their leadership.

Hockey

The 1st XI Boys made it six wins in a row, with a 5-0 win over Botany Downs High School. This sets up a top-of-the-table clash with Mt Albert Grammar at Avondale on Wednesday with the winner of that game winning the grade. Avondale beat MAGS 1-0 in their previous encounter. The 2nd XI Boys beat Macleans College’s 3rd XI 3-0 with Jiten Patel named player of the day. The 1st XI Girls also won their match, convincingly beating Rutherford College 5-0. The 2nd XI Girls beat McAuley High School 2-1 and the Under 15 Girls team defeated Auckland Girls Grammar 5-2 with Stacey Purdon and Nicole Brannen scoring the girls.

Netball

The netballers again had a good week, with almost all teams emerging victorious. The Senior Social 2 team beat Green Bay High School Senior C 21-9. The Junior Premiers beat Waitakere College 10A 30-11 and the 10A also had a win, downing Western Springs 10A Gold by 31-11. The 10B lost to Western Springs 10B 13-25 and the Year 10C team won 14-11 against Marist 10 Social. Natasha van Tilburg and Che Sabine were named players of the game for the 9A team who beat Green Bay 9A 36-10. The 9B team had an emphatic win, 25-8 over St Dominic’s 9C with Sheerti Kala playing particularly well.

The premier netball teams took part in the Auckland Combined Points tournament last week, with the Premier Girls, the Junior Premiers and the Year 9A teams involved. All teams had a successful day, with the results below:

Premier 1 - beat Kristin School 31-11, lost to Diocesan School 12-14, Epsom Girls 14-15 and St Kentigern’s College 11-14 before beating Strathallan College in the last game of the day. The Juniors Premiers had a draw, a loss and two wins, while the 9As had three close losses and a win to end the day.

Rugby

The 1st XV played the 1B Plate Semi-Final against Mt Roskill on Saturday and needed a last minute try to defeat them. The final score was 22-20 and this sets up a rematch of last year’s 1B Plate final – Avondale College Liston College which will be played next Saturday at 11.00am at Colin Maiden Park, as the curtain-raiser to the Auckland 1st XV final. The Under 16 Boys defeated Otahuhu College 17-10 while the Under 15 team ended their season with a loss to St Kentigern’s College. The Under 14 team also lost, going down to Sacred Heart, while the 4th Grade team were defeated by Waiheke High School.

Squash

The Girls Senior B1 team beat Botany Downs C1 4-1 in their match.

Ultimate Frisbee

The Ultimate competition has split into two sections with two Avondale College teams playing in the top division and the other team battling in the lower grade to qualify for the quarter-finals. Avondale College 1 had a successful night, defeating Avondale College 2 by 11-2 and then beating Takapuna Grammar School 8-3. Avondale College 2 went down to Auckland Grammar 3, while Avondale College 3 had two very close games, drawing with Auckland Grammar 2 six-all and losing to Pakuranga 2 5-6.

Sports Results

1st XI Hockey won 6-0 against Macleans

Basketball

With their starting 5 players out of the game through sickness or injury, the Premier Boys were up against Auckland Grammar School. The young bench players stepped up and played their hearts out but the final score was 44-142. The other basketball teams had an up and down week of games, although all teams have qualified for playoffs in their grades, which is a great result. The Under 19A Boys beat Rutherford 48-43, but lost to Green Bay 57-73. The Under 19B Boys struggled this week, losing to Green Bay and Henderson. The Under 17A Boys beat Henderson 54-44. The Under 17B Boys had two wins, beating Massey and then Liston by 42-35, while the Under 15 Boys beat Kelston Boys in a close game 33-30. The Under 15 Girls team played very well and defeated St Dominic’s 96-30.

Curling

Avondale College Collings took on Massey High School on the curling rink and came away with a 6-3 victory.

Football

The Boys 1st XI took on Mt Roskill away and the home ground advantage came through for them, Mt Roskill winning 1-3. The Boys 2nd XI had two games this week, with a catch up game from last term against Takapuna Grammar. Jiten Patel and Gian Pimental were the players of the game in a 1-2 loss. The team rebounded well for the weekend though, beating Lynfield College 2nd XI by 8 goals to nil. It was a strong team performance with the goals shared through the team. Keith Picardo captained the team for the first time and Nathan Henry was named player of the day. The 3rd XI Boys went down to Kelston Boys 1-4, with Sachin Variath named player of the day. The Year 10 Boys drew 0-0 with St Kentigern’s College and Pim Van Den Top was the player of the day. The Year 9 Boys also played against St Kentigern’s and played the better football throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize on their chances, losing 0-3.

The 1st XI Girls had a number of players unavailable due to injury, but a great team effort saw them beat Massey High School 1-0. Special mention must go to Jasmine Pereira and Raenada Gavet as well as Danica Maclean, who scored a cracking goal. The Girls 3rd XI were beaten by St Dominic’s 2nd XI 0-1, while the Girls Junior Premier team went down to Mt Albert Grammar 0-5 with Alea Carson named player of the day.

Hockey

The 2nd XI Boys took on Howick on Friday night and lost 0-2, but the Girls 1st XI posted the Hockey results of the week, with a 6-0 thrashing of Macleans College. The game was very much a one sided affair, proving that the 1st XI has come ahead in leaps and bounds this year. Freya Bullock was outstanding with her goal shooting and scored 5 goals with Alisa Samountry scoring 1. Natasha van Tilburg continues to prove that she is a player beyond her years with a very steady game again. Shreshtha Maita had some good runs forward as right half, while Sophie White and Saraniya Reid continue to play well in the midfield.

Netball

The junior netball programme had a great weekend with all teams winning their games. The Junior Premiers and Year 10A teams both took on Marist teams and played fast games to outpace their opponents. The Junior Premiers won 35-17 and the Year 10As won 46-17. The 9A team defeated Waitakere 9A 37-15 with Anastasia Sekene playing very well. Veronika Afatia worked very hard as goal shooter for the 9B team in their close defeat of Massey 9C, 24-20. The 9C team beat Green Bay 9B by 31-9. The whole team was exceptional, but Raechel McGonnell received special mention from her coach for some fantastic intercepts in the first half of the match.

Rugby

The 1st XV needed a few results to fall into place in order to make the top four in the 1B Plate. They had to beat Edgewater College but a lot, not let them score a try and hope some other teams lost as well in order to qualify. They achieved their part beating Edgewater by 67-3 and then had the other results go their way as well and will play in the semi-finals next week. The Under 16 Boys also had a big win, beating One Tree Hill 62-0, scoring 10 tries. The Under 14 Boys drew their game against Kelston Boys 17-17, while the 4th Grade won a close match against Sacred Heart 4B 19-15..

Sports Report - Week 8

Sports Report – Term 2, Week Ending 26 June 2011

Basketball
The Premier Boys basketball team got their season back on track with a great win over Kelston Boys 77-69. Kelston Boys had beaten the Avondale team in the first game of the season, so this was a great way to take the rematch. The Premier Girls lost to Mt Albert Grammar 49-91 with stand-out performances from Alyssa-Jean Savelio and Courtenay Le’au’anae. The Under 19A Boys went down to Green Bay in a close and controversial game. The final score was 46-47 after the referees disallowed an Avondale buzzer-beater for the win, saying the shot was made after time had expired. The Under 19B Boys also lost their game against Henderson 31-51. Overtime was required to separate the Under 17A Boys from their Lynfield opposition, but unfortunately it was Liston who came away from the extra time with a win, 41-47 over our boys. The Under 17B Boys beat Liston 57-36, while the Under 15 Boys also had a win, 42-29 over Kelston Boys. Both the Under 17 and Under 15 Girls teams played their St Dominic’s opposites, with Avondale winning both contests, 46-35 ad 52-25 respectively.

Curling
The curling season got underway with both Avondale teams in action, and both started impressively with AC Collings beating Epsom Girls Grammar 7-1 and AC Allen beating Massey High School 9-2.

Football
The Boys 1st XI faced a tough challenge against Botany Downs and lost the game 1-4. The season is still alive for the team though and they will be searching for a good result against Glenfield this week. The 2nd XI Boys played good football at times, but went down to St Kentigern’s 0-3. Goalkeeper Richard Sarfo saved his second penalty of the season and the player of the day was Jiten Patel. The 3rd XI Boys kept their unbeaten run alive this season with a 2-0 win over Green Bay. Alvee Alam was named played of the day. Leading with 10 minutes to go, the Year 10 Boys team unfortunately lost their composure a bit and were overtaken, losing 1-2. Tenniel Zhang scored Avondale’s goal in great fashion.
A late penalty from Hannah Hoeksema lifted the Girls 1st XI over Diocesan 1-0, while the Girls 2nd XI emerged victorious 1-0 from an arm-wrestle against St Dominic’s. The Girls 4th XI enjoyed a goal-fest as they defeated Green Bay 7-0. Brilliant play was displayed all over the field, and Ola Shahin knocked in several goals. The Junior Premier Girls team battled against Epsom Girls Grammar, but went down 0-2 despite Nechita Inwood’s great play. They now need to beat Western Springs this week to ensure a semi-final spot.

Hockey
The 1st XI Boys continued to build on their season, beating Kelston Boys 4-0. The Under 15 Boys played the reigning champions and perennial powerhouse Kings College at Kings and came away with a very well-earned draw. A Luke Fielding PC deflection put Avondale up after 38 minutes and the team hung on late for the draw. Great play by Jack Hooper in goal as well as Dane Tracey and Minesh Patel.
The 1st XI Girls team had a disappointing 0-0 draw with Marist. Despite a number of good attacks and several chances, the Marist goalkeeper was too good and kept Avondale off the score sheet.

The 2nd XI Girls team lost to St Cuthbert’s College, however the Under 15 Girls team beat Mt Albert Grammar 2 by 5 goals to 2, a great comeback considering they were down 0-2. Natasha van Tilburg scored a hat-trick and was player of the day, while Stacey Purdon and Jessica Taylor also scored goals.

The 1st XV lost their game against Southern Cross by 1-189. The Under 16 team had a draw, 10-10 against Tangaroa College. The Under 15s recorded their first win of the season, and a big-scalp it was – defeating Kings College 10-5. The Under 14 team went down 19-37 against Onehunga High School, despite a great fighting effort.

Squash
In the weekly competition, the Senior B1 Boys beat Rutherford 1 by 4-1, while the B2 Boys suffered a 1-4 loss to Green Bay Green. The Senior B1 Girls beat St Cuthbert’s 2, but St Cuthbert’s 1 were too strong for Avondale’s B2 Girls, 0-5.
Avondale also sent a Boys and a Girls team to the Division 2 Auckland Team Squash championships and both teams did very well. The Boys Squash Team won the plate competition, while the Girls Squash Team beat Alfriston, Epsom Girls, Orewa and eventual winners Diocesan to claim 2nd place overall. They were only denied the tournament win on count-back against Diocesan. Lauren Sharp led the team, winning all of her games without dropping a set.

Ultimate Frisbee
The three Avondale Ultimate teams had mixed results this week with Avondale 1 losing to Pakuranga 3 and Avondale 2 losing both their games against Takapuna Grammar opposition. The result of the week was the number 3 team getting a win over the number 1 team. Tim Howard and Craig Mildon played very well, while Sang Eun Park did great work on defence.

Cross Country
Luke Fielding was the standout performance for Avondale College at the Auckland Secondary School Cross Country championships held at St Kentigern’s College. He finished 16th in the Junior Boys competition which was a great result.

Football
The Boys 1st XI had a great 3-1 win over Mt Roskill Grammar over the weekend. The first half was scrappy and the team found themselves 1-0 down 10 minutes into the 2nd half. But they stuck to their strategy and it began to pay off. Substitutes Christian Walker and Rannesh Krishnan scored the goals in a deserved come-from-behind win. The other boys teams had the weekend off.
The 1st XI Girls had two games this week. In a rescheduled fixture against St Kentigern’s College, Avondale triumphed 2-1 with Hannah Hoeksema having a great game. On Wednesday, the girls drew 2-2 against Baradene. Kendra Evans nearly netted a hat-trick for the 2nd XI Girls team, scoring twice in their 5-0 win over Massey 2nd XI. Eunice Ng and Rikanjily Kumar also played well.  Player of the day was Anna Saito who has earned promotion to the 1st XI. Bragging rights were up for grabs in a very local derby as the 3rd XI Girls team took on the 4th XI Girls team. It was a keenly contested match, but the 4th XI ran away with it in the 2nd half, winning 7-0. Michelle Thorp scored three goals, and Isabelle Mitchell and Ola Shahin scored two each.

Hockey
The 1st XI Boys played very well against St Kentigern’s, going into the half level at 0-0. St Kent’s snuck a lucky goal and although Avondale created chances, they could not capitalize. The match was summed up when a last minute penalty corner shot from Jake Mitchelll bounced off the post. The final score was 0-1. The Under 15 Boys team drew 2-2 with St Peter’s College, with goals from Zayne Stephenson and Luc Vuletich.
The Girls 1st XI started with a hiss and a roar and constantly broke down St Cuthbert’s right side attack. Following several excellent attacking opportunities in the first half, Alisa Samountry scored a well earned goal to give us a one goal lead. Avondale dominated both the field and possession and were not under pressure at any stage of the game. Halfway through the second half Anisha Patel was able to convert a penalty corner shot from the left post and our lead increased to 2-0 which was the final score. The Under 15 Girls played a tough game against an experienced Mount Roskill Grammar School team and were beaten 0-8.

After the preliminary round of the Auckland Lawn Bowl championships, Alice Ferguson has qualified for the semi-finals which will be played at a date to be confirmed.

U15 Hockey Boys make the A Grade!

At the end of 2010 the U15 Boys Hockey Squad’s goal was clear.  Having won the B Grade they wanted to qualify to the A Grade, to play against the best hockey schools, teams and players they could. After two convincing wins in the play offs this term they have achieved that goal. This means that the hard work now begins for this group. In order to compete against the best, they must become the best they can be, so Individuals must improve their basic skills, and the team must apply the systems and patterns of play.

The squad is predominantly made up of Sports Academy students. Captained by Dane Tracey, they are young and relatively inexperienced but have passion and a drive to succeed – we wish them luck.

Newly Named NZ Rep, Janelle Moody

Basketball
The Premier Boys traveled to Rotorua just before the holidays for the Western Heights Basketball tournament – a good opportunity for some pre-season games. The boys lost their first game against Kristin but bounced back to win their second, qualifying for the quarter-finals. They won their quarter-final match against Kamo College by 30 points and in the semi-final they beat Rivers Lakes High School by 35.  The final of the tournament was a rematch of the first day’s game against Kristin School. Although the result was the same, the team showed how much they had improved over the weekend – making the game a far closer spectacle the second time around. The team finished 2nd therefore, a promising start to the season.

Representation
Congratulation to Kate Edwards who was named in the New Zealand Under 19 Lacrosse team over the holidays, and also to Del Crummer, Janelle Moody and Veronica Eades who were named in the New Zealand Under 19 Ultimate Frisbee team for a test series against Australia later in the year.

Winter Sports Codes
All of our Winter codes kick off this term, many of them this week. Good luck to all of our teams and a huge thank you to all of the staff and parents who do so much to ensure that students at Avondale College can participate in sport. A letter will be sent home with all winter sports players outlining the sports fees for this season. Please can these be paid as soon as possible – this year students will be made unavailable for selection for their team after week 3 if their fees have not been paid, or if arrangements have not been made with the school to pay them off over a longer period. Any questions about the Winter Sports programme can be directed to the staff in the Sports Office on 820 1736.

Softball Champions - Boys AND Girls!

The Avondale College boys' team competing at the Division 2 North Island Championships in New Plymouth
The Senior Boys' Softball team had a cracker of a season, being undefeated in the regional competition and conceding only 1 run. Great pitching from Gus Eerden helped take the boys to victory in every game, along with stellar batting from Aaron-Jermaine Tohovaka, Simon McMillan and Matthew Warner.

The boys continued their winning streak at the National Tournament in New Plymouth, until they lost a hard fought game against Hasting Boys High School in a nail-biting tie-breaker. Having only lost one game, the boys were still in 1st place and played Napier Boys High School in the final, winning  5-2. A number of players were chosen for the Tournament Team - Matthew Warner – Infield, Quinten Niu – Outfield and Eden Stubbs – Outfield

Congratulations to the boys, and we hope to see similar results next year.

TIC: Mr L Rea-McLauchlan

The Girls' Premier Softball team had a tough start, losing three close games at the regional tournament. Undaunted, they went 6-2 in league play to qualify for the league championship game. The team then went to Taranaki for the North Island tournament, finishing 7-2 and winning the North Island championship with strong showings against Pakuranga in the semi-final and beating an undefeated Hastings team 17-10 in the final.

The team was led by Jenna Leeuw and Gillian Wills, who have been selected for the All-Auckland and U-19 White Sox teams, respectively. As well, Freya Bullock and Liana Wiki were selected for the North Island all tournament team.

The team will welcome these two back, along with strong performers Saane Kaufanga, Rachel Moana, and Nicole McMillan next year.

Sports Report

Term 1, Week Ending 10 April 2011

Hockey
The Boys 1st XI are aiming to start the season looking sharp as they are playing in Auckland top school grade this year. The pre-season tour to Whangarei went very well, with some good games and stand out players Jake and Mitchell Murray are in good form.
The Girls 1st XI benefitted hugely from the trip away to begin the season, showing a lot of improvement through the three games. The early practice matches should stand the team in good stead ahead of the season-opener in Term 2.

Triathlon
Avondale College sent 4 teams to the Team Tag Triathlon at St Kentigern’s College. The Under 16 Mixed teams finished 6th and 9th, while the Under 19 Girls team unfortunately failed to finish due to an injury sustained on the run. The best result of the day went to the Under 14 Mixed team of Luke Fielding, Jake Erson and Caitlin Mann who won a silver medal.

Wrestling
The Avondale College Wrestling Team of 6 had another outing over the weekend, following on from the North Island Championships last weekend. This time the team headed back down to Hamilton for the National Secondary School Championships. Rushlee Pearce gained a silver medal in the Junior Boys division, while Ruth Minturn earned herself a national title, winning gold in the Junior Girls division. Ruth then moved up a grade, with more success – winning the Bronze medal in the Senior Girls division. It was a great event a huge debt of thanks is owed to Mr C Miller who has looked after the team and trained them up to a very high level in a very short period of time.

The Boys 1st XI had their last match of the term on Thursday and Friday last week. It was a great occasion to be able to play in front of the school during the day and the boys’ performance lifted with the support. Batting first on Thursday, Avondale College scored 230/9 declared with good contributions from all of the top order batsmen. Joseph Bell-Tyrer top scored with 41 while Sachin Variath hit 26 and Mark van Tilburg 33. Chasing 231 for first innings points Macleans College started well, but Vishi Kumar took wickets at key moments in the match, finishing with 6 for 69. Harshal Vyas and Anas Patel shared the other wickets as Macleans were dismissed for 213 late in the day to give Avondale College the first innings points. This puts them on top of the table in the Plate Championship leading into Term 4.
The Girls 1st XI played the quarter final on the NZCT Cup against St Cuthbert’s College on Wednesday and lost narrowly in a hard-fought contest.

Equestrian
Alison Potts rode in a composite school team at the North Island Dressage Championships and the team gained 2nd place in the overall open championship.

Softball
The Senior Boys and Senior Girls team both competed at the Division 2 North Island Championships in New Plymouth. It was a great week for both teams who played hard through all of their games and both teams ended up winning the final of their division to become Champions. Matthew Warner, Quinten Niu and Eden Stubbs were named in the boys Tournament team, while on the girls side Freya Bullock and Liana Wiki made the team. Both the boys and girls teams’ coaching staffs were named to the tournament team as well. Congratulations to the teams and thanks to Mr Rea-McLauchlan, Mr Borowicz, Ms Lange and the parents that went down with the team for their time and effort in putting the trip together.

Orienteering
The Auckland Sprint Finals were held last weekend and Thomas Stolberger placed 8th overall in the Junior Boys division.

Ultimate
The Senior Boys Ultimate team played off for 3rd and 4th in the Auckland Championships against Takapuna Grammar and came away with a comfortable win to claim 3rd place. Simon Gasson played another great game and led the team well throughout the season

Water Polo
The Senior Boys were dominant in their game against Lynfield College, winning 16-1 with Sean Newcombe scoring 9 goals. However, their unbeaten run to start the season came to an end when they lost to Kelston Boys 2-6 with a couple of key players missing at camp. The Junior Boys team won against Mt Albert 9-7 with some outstanding play from Cisco van Rijk. The Junior Girls drew 3-3 with Mt Albert Grammar.

Waka Ama
Two individuals represented Avondale College at the Waka Ama Nationals Regatta in Rotorua last week. Alyssa-Jean Savelio competed in the J19 Girls W1 250m Sprint. She progressed through to the Championship Final placing 6th overall. Anjelica Matapo competed in the J16 Girls W1 250m Sprint, progressing as far as the plate semi final and placing 3rd - just missing out on being in the plate final by 1.71 seconds

Wrestling
The Avondale College Wrestling team headed down to the North Island Championships held in Hamilton and had a very successful tournament. After only three training session, the team returned with two bronze medals and one gold. Kae Combridge won bronze in the Senior Boys Division, Rushlee Pearce won bronze in the Junior Boys division and Ruth Minturn won it all, claiming a gold medal in the Junior Girls Division.
Sports Report – Term 1, Week Ending 27 March 2011

Cricket
Saturday cricket was washed out for the second time in the season meaning no play was possible in any of the boys cricket matches. The Boys 1st XI were in the middle of a two-day game against Rangitoto College which was therefore called a draw.
The Girls 1st XI fared better with the weather, hosting a strong St Kentigern’s side on Wednesday afternoon. St Kent’s won the toss and sent Avondale in to bat. Avondale scored 110 runs from the 20 overs with Natasha van Tilburg scoring 52 not out and Michelle Thorp 28. Our bowlers put St Kents under pressure, with catches from Stacey Purdon and Michelle Thorp taking key wickets. At the end of 20 overs St Kents had also scored 110, leaving the scores tied. Avondale was declared the winner, having taken more wickets.
On Thursday and Friday the Girls 1st XI took part in the NZCT Auckland Girls Cricket Tournament in which they played three games and won three games which qualified them for the quarter-finals. Avondale’s  strongest bowlers were Amy Dalzell, Natasha van Tilburg, Danica MacLean and Yanica Auva’aNatasha van Tilburg continued her rich vein of form with the bat, scoring 55 not out and 57 not out in the first two matches. The quarter final game will be played at Avondale College on Wednesday against St Cuthbert’s College.

Touch
The Premier Girls took part in the Auckland Regional Touch tournament over the weekend, having qualified by winning the Western Zone competition. The day started well with a 3-3 draw against Northland College and a 4-2 win over Waitakere College. The team then had losses to Rangitoto and Mahurangi, and had to wait on some other results to work out their final placing. In the end, Team gained 3rd overall and with this result, the girls team has qualified for Nationals to be held 9-11 December in Hamilton. Captain Faamu Ross, who never stopped trying, was outstanding and was supported well by Claudia West and Renee Ikitogia

Softball
The Senior Boys finished the Western Zone competition with a big win against Aorere College, with some massive hits from Simon McMillan, Matt Warner and Aaron Tohovaka against a heavy wind.  The match was a good warm up for the upcoming Division 2 National Tournament, which the Senior Girls team will also be attending.

Tennis
Unfortunately all Saturday tennis games were rained off this week.

Ultimate
After dominating Northcote College in the quarter-finals, the Senior Boys ultimate team drew Westlake Boys, the defending champions, in the semi-final round. Both teams put on a fantastic display of competitive Ultimate, with Avondale playing their best game of the season. Blair McCullough was a giant on defense, Solomon Marshall marked very well while Simon Gasson provided the offensive spark. Unfortunately it was not quite enough, as Westlake also played a great game and won 8-5. The boys will play for 3rd this week – which will be a great achievement in only their first year of playing.
The Senior Girls team has been improving all season and entered the playoffs with an outside chance of making the final. They surpassed all expectations, however, when they surprised Takapuna Grammar School 4-3 in the semi-final and then caused the upset of the season – beating Northcote College 6-3 in the final to become Auckland Champions. All of the team played extremely well and Coach Mr Stewart put the win down to the girls commitment to training and team work on the field.

Water Polo
The Senior Boys continued their strong season with a 9-2 victory over Mt Roskill. Sean Newcombe, Jesse Coleman and Kelvin Lin played very well. The Senior Girls lost a close game to Northcote College the final score of 2-6 did not reflect the amount of possession the Avondale team had. The Junior Boys team also had a close defeat, going down 7-9 to Green Bay. Cisco van Rijk, Reed Hallett and Lex Doesburg all had great games. The Junior Girls team beat Marist 5-1 – an excellent result for the team with Caitlin and Briahna Mann as well as Reese Gleeson playing very well.

Waka Ama
The Girls Waka Ama team competed in the Auckland Sprint regatta and posted some good results on their way to 2nd place in the Plate Final.

Avondale College’s Ultimate Frisbee girls’ team won the Auckland Secondary School Girls Ultimate Championship last week.
This is the inaugural Girls Championship and this is the first year that Avondale have entered.  The girls have shown great commitment to training and their improvement in skill and strategy has been impressive.

Sports Results - Week 6

Breaststroke Champion, Caitlin Mann
As the summer sports season draws to a close, some excellent results are being achieved by our summer sport players. Achievements worthy of special mention this week were:
  • Hayden Cate’s unbeaten century for the 2nd XI cricket team
  • The Premier Girls Touch team winning the Western Zone competition and qualifying for Auckland Championships
  • Caitlin Mann winning the Junior Girls Breaststroke title at Central/West Zone Swimming Champs
  • The Senior Boys Water Polo team finishing 3rd at North Island Champs
Next week is summer tournament week and we have several team involve in events around the country. The Softball teams will be heading to New Plymouth for the Division 2 National tournament, the Waka Ama team will be competing at the NZ Secondary School Regatta in Rotorua and the wrestling team will be competing at the North Island Championships. Good luck to all students involved in these events and a HUGE thank you to the staff who are giving up large amounts of time (in some cases overnight stays) to take these teams away.

Cricket
The Boys 1st XI began a two-day game against Rangitoto College on Saturday, the fourth time the two teams have played this year in various competitions. Due to a damp pitch, the start was delayed and the batsmen breather a sigh of relief when Sachin Variath won the toss and elected to field first. Progress by Rangitoto was slow with some tight bowling by Avondale. Rangitoto ended the day on 163/6 and the game will continue next Saturday.
The Boys 2nd XI continued their successful start in the two-day match against Liston College. Resuming on 126/1, Avondale declared their innings closed at 293/2 with a 175 run lead. The highlight of the day was Hayden Cate’s unbeaten century and he finished the innings on 107 not out, and was ably supported by Saurabh Banodhia who was 54*. Looking for an outright win, Avondale attacked from the bowling crease, with Faizan Kapadia bowling fast and accurately. He finished with 4/21 and was supported well by Nihal Patel who took 3 wickets. However, Liston were able to hold on and finished on 88/7. The match was drawn with first innings points to Avondale.
The Year 10 Boys continued their match with Auckland Grammar in a precarious state at 5/3, but fought hard through the day. They were bowled out of 52 and forced to follow-on, but batted the rest of the day to ensure the match was drawn. Mark Mildon had an impressive debut for the team, despite no previous batting experience. Nick Ball was Avondale’s most outstanding player.
The Year 9 Boys match against Liston College was set up nicely with Avondale on 13/1 chasing 186 for first innings points. Marcus Smillie led the batting effort with a courageous 31, batting through a knee injury, but Avondale fell just short, being bowled out for 117. Liston finished the day on 13/2 and the match was drawn.

Golf
The Premier Boys Golf team went down to Ormiston 13.5 - 22.5 in a close match.

Touch
The Premier Girls defeated Rutherford College 8 – 3 in the last game of the Western Zone Competition, which was enough to clinch the title. As the winner of the Western Zone, the team qualifies for the Auckland Secondary School Touch Championships to be held this weekend.
The Premier Boys defeated Hoani Waititi 5 – 3 in their last game, narrowly missing out on qualification to the Auckland Secondary School Touch Championships.

Softball
The Senior Boys team had another dominating game, this time against Rutherford College, emerging as 14 – 0 victors. They also beat Onehunga High School.

Swimming
The Central/West Zone swim meet was held on Tuesday 15 March at West Wave Aquatic Centre. Avondale College was well represented in the pool and in the final results with the following standout performances:
Caitlin Mann                  1st         Junior Girls Breaststroke
Sean Newcombe           2nd        Senior Boys Backstroke
Ezekiel Kaleopa             2nd        Junior Boys Backstroke
Sean Newcombe           3rd         Senior Boys Freestyle
Trent Andersen              3rd         Intermediate Boys Breaststroke
Rueben Goh                  3rd         Junior Boys Backstroke
Avondale relay teams:
1st         Open Girls Butterfly
1st         Junior Girls Breaststroke
3rd         Junior Girls Freestyle
3rd         Intermediate Boys Freestyle
3rd         Junior Girls Medley
3rd         Intermediate Boys Medley

Tennis
The Senior A Boys had a good Saturday out, defeating Lynfield College 6-3. Two matches were very close, but unfortunately Avondale came out on the wrong side of them, the Senior B Boys losing 4-5 to MAGS and the Senior A Girls losing 4-5 to Green Bay. The Intermediate Boys played a lot of good tennis, despite going down 2-7 to Kelston Boys. The Senior B Girls lost to Auckland Girls Grammar 0-9, the lop-sided score reflecting the fact that Avondale’s team is made up of beginners while Auckland Girls Grammar’s squad is one of the top teams. The girls still gained a lot of good experience from the match. The Intermediate Girls team had a 5-4 win over St Dominic’s which included a couple of wins from Avondale beginner players, proving that the work they are putting in at training is starting to pay off.

Ultimate
The Senior Boys team finished the round robin competition with a well-earned 14 – 4 victory over Takapuna 2. They used all the skills and strategies they have learned over the previous month and it was a good all-round team effort. In the playoff to see the quarter finals, Avondale played Takapuna 1, a team that beat them last week. This time, Avondale put the pressure on early and leapt out to an 8-1 lead. Although they took the foot off the gas, they still cruised to a 9 – 6 win. They will be seeded 3rd for the quarter finals starting next week.
The Senior Girls team is improving fast and had a very narrow loss, 4 – 5, to Takapuna in the first game this week. Janelle Moody has led the team extraordinarily well and, like the team, has improved each week. The girls played brilliant defense in their second game, against Northcote, the competition leaders, and gained their first points of the competition with a very well-earned 2 – 2 draw.

Water Polo
The Senior Boys competed at the North Island Championships on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week. With a record of three wins and a loss from pool play, Avondale progressed to the semi finals, where they lost to Northcote College. In the 3rd/4th place game, they played very well for an 11 – 6 win. Thus, Avondale finished in 3rd place overall – a great result. The team scored 45 goals, conceding only 32 and the player of the tournament for Avondale was Sean Newcombe with a 25 goals in 6 games.
Unfortunately both the Senior Girls and Junior Girls had a loss this week, while the Junior Boys had no game.

Sports Results - Week Five

The poor weather on Saturday washed out much of last weekend’s sport, but there was still plenty of action in week 5 of the school year. Western Zone athletics were held at the Trusts Stadium in Waitakere and Avondale had a very successful meet with 30 students qualifying to the Greater Auckland Championships. Two students also had had success outside of school in the Auckland Athletics Championships. Saane Kaufanga won the Women’s 16-grade Javelin competition and Maggie Bradley won the Women’s 19-grade 3000m Race Walk.

Athletics
Thirty athletes finished in the top-three of their event to automatically qualify to the Greater Auckland Championships which will be held on Monday 21 March at Mt Smart Stadium. Top individual performers were Elizabeth Hurrell who won the Junior Girls Long Jump and Junior Girls 100m and placed second in the Junior Girls 200m and Timotheo Isaya who won the Junior Boys High Jump and Junior Boys Triple Jump and gained second place in the Junior Boys Long Jump. Other athletes who won their events were:

Luke Fielding               Junior Boys 1500m
Jasmine Pereira           Intermediate Girls Shot Put
Saane Kaufanga           Intermediate Girls Javelin
Milan Pickering            Intermediate Boys Shot Put
Sitiveni Ramatalei        Senior Boys Triple Jump
Lotima Apolosi            Senior Boys Shot Put

Cricket
All cricket on the weekend was washed out.

Touch
Both Avondale touch teams continue to do well in the Western Zone competition. The Premier Girls beat Kelston Girls 8 – 1, and then beat Massey High School 2 – 0 in a very close match.
The Premier Boys played a brilliant game of touch against Green Bay High School. The boys were absolutely dominant from the first set of six.  Great debut by Hamish Birkbeck who showed fantastic pace and agility. The team executed plays perfectly with notable try scoring moves from Mason Lino and Desmond Rere, as well as Rima Kamoe who set up a number of touchdowns..

Softball
The Senior Girls had to contend with rain stoppages in their Western Zone competition this week. The game against Aorere College is still in progress, locked at 3-all when rain forced the game to be delayed. It will be completed this week when the girls are scheduled to have a bye. In the second game, against Otahuhu, the girls gave up gave up 11 runs in the first inning, digging themselves into a big hole. They fought hard to get back into the match, but fell just short – the final score 9 – 14. Veronica Vargas and Freya Bullock both had home runs to lead the offense.

The Senior Boys team had big wins against Otahuhu (14 – 0) and Green Bay (20 – 0) this week and are currently dominating the Central West Zone. A stern test will come this week though, when they face Auckland Grammar School who are also doing very well.

Volleyball
The Premier Boys volleyball team dropped their first set of the year, but came back strongly to maintain their unbeaten record this year. They beat Kelston Boys 2 – 0 and then Waitakere 2 – 1.
The Premier Girls team lost to Long Bay and Otahuhu over the weekend, but the Senior Girls team fared much better in the Central West Zone beating both Western Springs and Marist in straight sets.
Tennis
All tennis was rained off on Saturday and this round will now be played on the reserve day – Saturday 26 March.

Ultimate
The Senior Boys team started off the week well with a convincing 8 – 1 win over Westlake Boys 2. Missing a few key players at camp, the boys showed they are grasping the key elements of the sport and the increase in strategy showed on the field. In the second game of the day, they came up against defending champions Westlake 1. The boys made some amazing plays including the catch of the season by Elvin Alfaro, who dived to catch a disc that could only have been millimeters above the ground, and Tim Brebner using his face to block an opposition pass. However, it was to no avail, Westlake coming out on top 8 – 4.
The Senior Girls showed dramatic improvement in their second game of the season, losing narrowly to Northcote 3 – 7.

Water Polo
The Senior Boys team beat Liston 6 – 4 and Green Bay 14 – 3 to maintain their unbeaten record. Sean Newcombe put 9 nine goals in the back of the net in the two games. The Junior Boys beat Lynfield 11 – 5 with Lex Doesburg netting 5 times. The Senior Girls lost to Carmel, while the Junior Girls showed that their season holds a lot of promise with a win against Western Springs 8 – 3. Caitlin Mann and Reese Gleeson had outstanding games.

Unfortunately the Waka Ama sprints was cancelled over the weekend due to poor weather conditions.

Sports Results - Week Three

Mat Fraser receives his school cap for 15 First XI Cricket appearances. Matt then went on to score 72 not out in the 10 wicket win over Rangitoto College.

Week Three was a huge week of sport for the school and included two of the biggest events of the school sports year. The school swimming sports was held on Wednesday at West Wave pool in Henderson, and the entire school participated in the Athletics day on Friday. Congratulations to all those who took part and to those who won their events. Both days showcased Avondale College’s fantastic school spirit with all of the students supporting and cheering each other on.

Representation
Sachin Variath has been selected to the Auckland Secondary School Cricket Association team which will tour India later on this year. He cemented his place in the side by scoring a century in the final trial match on Sunday. Congratulations, Sachin!

Cricket
The Boys 1st XI cricket team notched up their first win of the One-Day competition with a commanding performance against Rangitoto College at Rangitoto. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Avondale piled the pressure on the batsmen, who struggled to score on a seemingly slow wicket. With the run rate kept under control, Vinay Patel took the chance to attack the batsmen and created havoc, finishing with figures of 5/19. Set a target of only 110, Matthew Fraser and Sachin Variath made the pitch look very easy to bat on, as they overhauled the total in the 16th over. Matthew brought up his 50 in only 34 balls and ended on 72 not out including some excellent sixes. Sachin was also there at the end on 29 not out.

The Girls 1st XI played their first game of the season against St Cuthbert’s. Batting first, Avondale didn’t lose many wickets, but the scoring rate was slow and they finished on 85/1 after their 20 overs. Natasha van Tilburg finished on 39 not out. Unfortunately this was not enough as St Cuthbert’s scored 86/2. Isabelle Gray took 1/13.

The Boys 2nd XI drew their match against Parnell College after two days of play. Last week Parnell scored 210/9 with Roopesh Vanamala taking 4/33. Avondale replied with 181 all out – a solid batting effort, but not quite enough to take first innings points. Nihal Patel scored 29 and Roopesh Vanamala rounded out a great game with 24. With only a few minutes left in the game, Parnell batted for the second time and finished on 28/2. New coach Mr Le Roux says this team has talent and he has high hopes for the rest of the season.

The Boys Year 10 team continued their match against Liston College. Avondale set 81 in their first innings and Parnell declared their innings closed at 170, chasing an outright win. Avondale batted much better in the second innings and held on to be 112/6 at the end. Nick Ball top-scored in the second innings with 19.

The Boys Year 9 team were in control of their match against Auckland Grammar School. Avondale had bowled AGS out last week for 92 and they continued their innings this week. Marcus Smillie brought up a half-century and Sam Bell-Tyrer scored 41 in Avondale’s total of 193/4. This sealed first innings points for Avondale, but they chased the outright win. Auckland Grammar finished on 125/6 and thus the match ended in a draw.

Touch
This week was very successful for both Avondale's Touch teams. The Premier Boys team beat Massey 3 by 10-0 and Massey 2 by 7-0 with great attacking flair and strong defence. Mason Lino and Don Tofae played particularly well. The Premier Girls also had a win, beating St Dominic’s 7-1 to remain unbeaten so far this season.

Volleyball
The Premier Boys volleyball team were untroubled in their first games of the season, beating Henderson and Onehunga in straight sets. The Senior Girls team also started well in the Western Zone competition, beating Lynfield (25-5, 25-11) and Waitakere (25-10, 25-10). The Premier Girls found the going tougher in the Premier Grade, losing their games to Mangere and MAGS.

Tennis
The Senior A Boys had a comfortable win first up, accounting for Waitakere 8-1. The Intermediate Boys also had a win, beating Massey High 6-3. The other tennis teams all had slow starts to the season, but showed promise. Several of the games that were lost were lost in a tie-breaker.

A fantastic day was had at the West Wave pool for the annual Avondale College Swimming Sports. There were a number of great swims during the day, but two performances stood out above the rest. Caitlin Mann dominated the pool during her races, taking part in seven events with seven wins including all of the Junior Girls events and a number of the Open events as well. Sean Newcombe swam nine events winning eight of them and coming in second in the only race he did not win. Congratulations to all of the students who took part in the event and thanks to the Sports Council students who helped with timing and recording on the day.

Avondale won the toss and sent MAGS into bat. A good fielding effort saw three runouts and MAGS were in some trouble midway through the innings. A late fight back saw them post 198/9 off their 50 overs. Unfortunately this proved too much for the Avondale batsmen who struggled against some good bowling. Avondale were finally bowled out for 49.

Sports Results - Term One Week One

1st XI boys Cricket got underway before the official start of school with Avondale College playing two matches. Most other summer sports will also start up extremely quickly in what is a very busy start to the school year for the Avondale Sports Department.

Cricket
A young and inexperienced Avondale College Boys 1st XI took the field for their first competition match of the season on Friday, up against Auckland Grammar School. Avondale upset AGS to start last year’s season and were keen to do so again. Unfortunately AGS proved too strong scoring a formidable 254/7. Pretesh Patel took 3/48 and was ably supported by Harshal Vyas. The Avondale batsmen didn’t give their wickets away during the chase, but were unable to keep up with the steep run rate and finished on 176/8. Matt Fraser scored a half century in making 52. The team showed it could compete with the big teams at this level, but need to build some confidence given their youth.

The Boys 1st XI also played on Saturday in the second game of the season, hosting Kelston Boys High. Avondale batted first and scored 136 with good contributions from Vinnay Patel, 32, and Mitchell Murray, 31. Defending a low score was always going to be tough and so it proved with Kelston making 138/2. Harshal Vyas and Zubayr Smith were the wicket takers. The team has a match against local rivals Mount Albert Grammar School this coming Saturday.

Cricket Nationals: Girls Place 5th in NZ

Avondale's 1st XI Girls
In early December the 1st XI Girls Cricket team travelled to Taupo for the finals of the NZCT Cup. This is a national competition: 128 schools entered, with only eight teams qualifying for the finals. Many of the teams in the tournament attend every year and the standard of cricket played is very high.

On Day 1 of the tournament we lost to a very strong Christchurch Girls High School team, who were the eventual winners of the tournament. On the second day we convincingly beat Wellington Girls College (last year’s winners), with a strong batting performance from Shannen Elliott.

Ultimately we played in the 5th/6th play off game against Wanganui Collegiate. We put Wanganui in to bat and they scored 172 runs - more than double our previous scores in the tournament. Great batting from Tori Higgs, supported by Shannen Elliott and Julia Vito took us to the required 173 with 2 overs spare, giving our team a final placing of 5th in New Zealand.

At prizegiving Shannen Elliott and Julia Vito were giving bowling awards for taking more than 10 wickets during the tournament. Shannen and Julia were also named in the Tournment Team of the 11 top players over the four days. Tori Higgs was named as the Most Valuable Player in our team.

National Secondary School Athletics Champs

Great results just in from our athletes competing in the National Secondary School Athletics Championships held in Hastings 11 and 12 December with three of our athletes gaining medals. All in all we achieved 11 performances that placed our athletes in the top 10 of their event in New Zealand.

Congratulations to Phillip Wyatt on placing second in the Senior Boys Triple Jump, Milan Pickering gained a Bronze Medal in the Junior Boys Shot Put and Maggie Bradley was third in the Girls Open 2000m Walk.

Other top ten performances came from Saane Kaufanga, fifth in the Junior Girls Javelin, Anna Fritsch 7th Senior Girls Javelin, Phillip Wyatt 8th SB Long Jump, Milan Pickering 8th JB Javelin, Oketa Afele 9th SG Discus, Lotima Apolosi 10th SB Hammer Throw, Rebecca Wyatt 10th JG Triple Jump and Ethan Sorrell 10= JB High Jump.

Many of our team of 22 athletes are inexperienced at this level of competition and we were delighted with the way they performed. For most they still have another year in the same grade. We were also able to enter four relay teams and it is great to see us developing some depth across a variety of events.

Thanks to those who coached. Nora and Brent Curtis were fantastic as usual, Peter and Matthew Wyatt were superb and Scott McLaren, a high-performance decathlete himself, provided some invaluable expertise.

Managing a team of 22 athletes was made easy through the excellent organisation of Susan Brown and the assistance of Dr Terry Brown.

To the parents who accompanied the group and the other athletes who haven’t had their name mentioned above, thanks for making it a great trip, successful and enjoyable, and hope to see you back next December in Wellington.

The Avondale College Junior Girls 4x100m also produced a top ten performance in Hastings, bringing our total to 12. They produced the 8th fastest time but missed the final by one place because five of the fastest teams were in the same heat. Congratulations to Rebecca Wyatt, Hope Curtis, Alisa Samountry and coach Nora Curtis.

Finally, congratulations to Oketa Afele  who competed in the Senior Girls Discus event, placing  9th in New Zealand.

Sports Results - Week Seven

Weekly sport is winding down as the end of the school year approaches. Many teams will have their one-day tournament or championships tournament over the next couple of weeks.

Cricket
The Year 9 Boys competed in the NZCT Plate tournament at the beginning of last week, held at Keith Hay Park. On Monday they beat Liston College after scoring 150/5 in their 20 over (Ryan Burgess top scoring with 48) and then holding Liston to only 111/7. The second game of the day was awarded to Avondale by default. On Tuesday the Year 9 team took on Macleans and went down by 33 runs after Macleans scored 116/0 and Avondale was bowled out for only 83. However, the team was offered a chance to avenge that defeat in the afternoon, when the 3rd/4th playoff involved the same teams. This time Avondale batted first and put up a good score of 136/4 thanks to Mitchell Murray’s innings of 61 not out. Macleans was restricted to 123/9, giving Avondale the win and 3rd place in the competition. Zubayr Smith was the standout bowler.

In off-the-field news, Avondale had a very successful night at the inaugural Auckland Secondary School Cricket Association prize-giving function. Four of the eight awards given out on the night were won by Avondale College students, highlighting a very successful year for the cricket programme. Sachin Variath won the Premier A Batsman of the Year and Most Outstanding Performance awards, while Julia Vito was named Girls Premier Bowler of the Year and Michelle Thorp picked up the Girls Premier Wicketkeeper of the Year award. Congratulations to Sachin, Julia and Michelle.

Softball
The Junior Boys finished their season with a good win over St Peter’s, beating them 5 to 4. The team finished 2nd in the Western Zone competition.

Touch
The Junior Girls team took part in the Auckland Girls Touch Championship tournament last week, after winning the Western Zone competition the week before. The girls played very well all day, losing only one game. Unfortunately the loss was in the quarter-final stage, meaning the girls finished 5th overall. Although disappointed to lose the quarter-final match, the girls showed great resolve to bounce back and win their final two games and the plate competition.

Awards for Avondale Cricketers

On Thursday night at the inaugural ASSCA awards, Avondale College cricketers swept four awards. And it wasn’t just the boys taking the glory.

The Boys 1st XI Captain Sachin Variath was rewarded for his stellar season by taking both the ‘Premier A Batsman of the Year Award,’ for his accumulation of over 600 runs, and also the ‘Most Outstanding Performance of the Year Award’ for his record breaking 261 not out, in a day, versus Macleans College. Ironically the awards were held in the Bert Sutcliffe Pavilion at Eden Park, Sutcliffe being the only man in the history of schoolboy cricket to eclipse Sachin’s total.  Daman Singh was pipped into second place for the ‘Premier Bowling Award.’

Not to be outdone, the Girls 1st XI were also honoured through Julia Vito, who claimed the ‘Girls Premier Bowler of the Year Award’ and Michelle Thorp who was the recipient of the “Girls Premier Wicketkeeper of the Year Award’. Julia has had an outstanding year and as well as this award was also capped by the Samoan National Cricket team. Captain Torie Higgs was also on hand to receive the Auckland Knockout Cup on behalf of the team.

The Girls 1st XI now travel to Taupo to represent the whole of Auckland in the NZCT National Tournament, where they will compete with schools from every cricketing district in the country.
Despite their successes, each of the recipients would be first to acknowledge the hard work from their coaches, Mr Nazeem Smith and Miss Kim Reed.
Congratulations to all our students and coaches.

Sports Report - Week Five

A number of Junior sports had their last week of competition this week and we saw a number of good performances from Avondale College teams. In particular, congratulations to the Junior Girls touch team who won the Western Zone Touch competition.

Cricket
The Boys 1st XI completed their match against Mt Albert Grammar on Saturday which was also the team’s last day of play for the year. The match ended in drama with Avondale needing just one wicket to clinch outright victory with time running out, but MAGS held on to finish on 91/9. Earlier MAGS had been dismissed for 152, giving them a lead on the first innings of 38 runs. Giles White took 5 for 35. Avondale then batted and scored 139 before declaring to set MAGS 102 to win.  Sachin Variath top scored with 52. Daman Singh took 3 for 18 in the second innings to set up the thrilling finish, before the match ended in a draw.
The Year 10 Boys played Kings College on Saturday and batting first, Kings scored 129/8 off their 20 overs. Ajay Vaidya had excellent figures of 2 for 8 and Andrew Glubb took 2 for 17. Andrew also compiled 39 not out in Avondale’s innings, helping the team chase down the total comfortably. Avondale ended on 130/4 thanks to two good partnerships between Anas Patel and Samir Khan followed by Ashan Wijetillake and Andrew Glubb. Andrew was named Man of the Match.
The Year 9 Boys played the 2nd day of their match against Takapuna Grammar. Having scored 238 last week and having Takapuna in trouble at 10/3, the Avondale side continued their good work, dismissing Takapuna for 73 runs. Avondale sent Takapuna back into bat, however the weather intervened and the match had to be called off due to rain. First innings points to Avondale.

Softball
The Junior Girls softball team played in the final of the Western Zone competition against Waitakere College. The girls played their best games of the season and the scores were all tied at the end of the match. It went on to extra innings and Waitakere managed to score the winning run. The whole team played exceptionally well and were very supportive of each other.
The Junior Boys played two matches this week, winning both of them. They defeated Rutherford 15-3 with Quinten Nui and Cameron Robinson scoring 3 runs each and Liam Cornelius 4. In the second game, Avondale defeated Lynfield 11-1. Daniel Day pitched well in both games.

Touch
The Junior Boys lost to Massey B 2 – 6 with Jake Kamuhemu scoring a runaway try and the team combining well with some good team work. Massey found a few holes in Avondale’s defence and capitalized on them for the win.
The Junior Girls played in the final against Waitakere and it was a very tense and close encounter. The game was tied 2 – 2 at full time and therefore a drop-off extra time was required to decide a winner. The teams were down to 4 vs 4 when Faamu Ross scored the winner for Avondale. Congratulation to the team – Western Zone Champions 2010!

Water Polo
The Junior Boys team lost to Long Bay 1 – 4, despite another great game from Cisco van Rijk in goal.
The Junior Girls team created a lot of scoring opportunities against Massey, but couldn’t convert enough of them, going down 5 – 7.

Waka Ama
The Junior Boys and Girls Waka Ama crews competed at the Auckland Junior Sprint Regatta on Saturday 13 November. The Junior Boys came 4th in the W6 Division 2 Championship Final, while the Junior Girls came 4th in the Division 2 Plate Final. In the mixed W6, Avondale came 2nd in the Division 2 Championship Final. The Mixed W12 was a new event in this year’s regatta. This event involved two wakas rigged together and a crew of 12. both our Junior Boys and Junior Girls crews combined their efforts and achieved a fantastic result, coming 2nd in the Championship Final.

Volleyball
Both Junior teams were involved in the Auckland Championship Tournament that was held on Thursday and Friday last week.
The Junior Boys team were drawn in a very difficult pool and went down to Otahuhu College and Tangaroa College. On day two they bounced back and won both morning games, beating James Cook and Rutherford College. However, fatigue played a factor in the afternoon and the boys lost their final two games to St Kentigern’s College and James Cook. The Junior boys finished 20th overall.
The Junior Girls team started off very well with wins over Long Bay and Marcellin College. However they too suffered from fatigue in the afternoon and lost to Mangere and Rangitoto. On day two the girls went down to Aorere College but bounced back in their last game to beat Otahuhu to claim 11th position. The Junior Girls will play in the North Island Championships next week.

Sports Results Week 3

Week 3 was a busy sports week with all sports team now involved in games.

Cricket
The Boys 1st XI got off to a good start in their two day match against Rosmini College. Rosmini was bowled out before the end of the day for 233. Vishwa Samaranayake was the stand out performance, taking 7 for 43 including two wickets with his last two balls, leaving him on a hat trick. Daman Singh broke an important partnership earlier in the day with an amazing highlight reel catch, which sparked a Rosmini collapse. Facing the difficult task of batting the few remaining overs, Avondale struggled losing both openers and a night watchman before the close of play. Avondale College will resume next week on 29/3 chasing 234 for first innings points.
The Year 10 cricket team started their second half of the season well, winning over St Peter’s School at home. Avondale scored 168/6 with Anas Patel hitting 51, Samir Khan 41 and Andrew Glubb 21no. Tight fielding and effective bowling restricted St Peter’s scoring opportunities and they could only muster 115/3. Andrew Glubb was man of the match.
The Year 9 boys played a fired up Auckland Grammar side and struggled to contain their batting line up. Auckland Grammar declared at 270/2 and then had Avondale reeling at 34/4. Ryan Burgess and Zubayr Smith took the wickets in the first innings and a huge effort awaits the team next week.

Softball
The Junior Girls softball team opened their season in impressive style, beating Rutherford college 21-1. Nicole McMillan pitched very well and also hit a double. Rachel Moana hit two home runs and Liana Wiki and Saane Kaufanga each hit a home run as well.

Tennis
The Senior A Girls team beat Massey High School 6-3 and the Intermediate Girls team also had a win, 7-2 over Epsom Girls Grammar School. The Senior A Boys team had a win over a strong Lynfield team by a score of 6 – 3. The Senior B Girls, Senior B Boys and Intermediate Boys all lost close matches.

Touch
The Junior Boys played a very well drilled Kelston Boys team and couldn’t quite hang with them, going down 11 – 0. The boys played with great heart, never giving up and Moses McGreal kept the boys going forward throughout the match. The Junior Girls team were well led by Fa’amu Ross and vice-captain Claudia West and came out on top of Kelston Girls 4 – 0. Paige Tetevano and Fa’afua Silipa also played good games.

Volleyball
The Junior Boys won both their games this week but took three sets in each game to do it. They beat Onehunga High School and Lynfield College 2 – 1. The Junior Girls Black team beat both the Kelston Girls 1 and Kelston Girls 2 team 2 – 0, and the Junior Girls White team completed the Avondale College volleyball clean sweep with 2 – 0 wins over Lynfield College and Green Bay 3.

Water Polo
The Junior Boys water polo team went down this week to Westlake Boys High School B 5 – 8. James Law had a great game with 4 goals.

Bowler in 7 Wicket Haul

On Saturday the 1st XI travelled across the Harbour Bridge to take on Rosmini College and having won the toss elected to bowl. Initially it was hard going and the hosts made it to 84 for 2 in quick time before a Vishwa Sanaranayake blitz saw the home team reduced to 98 for 5. The batsmen again consolidated and it took an outstanding catch from Daman Singh off the bowling of captain, Sachin Variath, to end a 100 run partnership. Daman took an over the shoulder catch whilst running toward the boundary rope. His momentum carried him over the boundary rope, but he had the presence of mind to flip the ball back into play, turn 180 degrees and then dive forward to his knees to take a two handed catch. As far as individual brilliance goes, it was most definitely a season’s highlight.

The home side then collapsed from 231 for 6 to 234 all out. Vishwa Samaranayake took 3 of the final 4 wickets to fall for an innings haul of 7 for 43, 5 of which were clean bowled. Disappointingly for Vishwa, Mitchell Murray took the final wicket, caught behind by Fahad Dad, meaning that Vishwa will sit ‘on a hat-trick’ for 7 days. This meant that we then had to face 11 overs before the close of play, always a tricky task. Unfortunately, chasing 235 for a first innings win, we lost both openers caught behind and night watchman Joseph Amundsen clean bowled, staggering to 29 for 3 at the end of the day. Avish Sharma and an unusual suspect with the bat, Giles White, are at the crease and with plenty of batting to come, 206 further runs are required.

Equestrian Gains Second Placing

Alison Potts and her pony Maggie May competed successfully at the North Island Schools Showjumping Championships on Friday 29 October at St Peters College in Cambridge. The pair completed three good rounds and came second in the third round. This was an excellent result. She was competing with at least sixty riders from around the country.

1st XI Cricket Secure Seventh Win in Eight Games

Avish Sharma takes third Sacred Heart wicket
Following on from last Saturday, where we scored 287 runs declared at the end of Day One, the objective was straight forward; take 10 wickets for a first innings victory or 20 for an outright win. The first session of Sacred Heart’s innings could not really have gone any better with Giles White taking two wickets and Avish Sharma (pictured) a third. This had the hosts reeling at 22 for 3 and our boys’ with their tails up. The highlight to this point, was a smart catch to dismiss the opener at first slip, by Akash Anthony. Cricket though, is a cruel sport and there were to be many twists and turns to be had, before the completion of this match.

The second session belonged to Sacred Heart, who consolidated very well and at lunch had not lost any further wickets and following the break they continued this good form, closing in on the 288 target for victory.

The Avondale nerves were calmed by a two wicket burst from Akash Anthony but with seven wickets down, Sacred Heart needed only 33 runs to win and with one batsmen set in the 50’s the outlook looked bleak.

Despite the frayed nerves on the sideline, the team produced a rousing, fighting finale. Joseph Amundsen produced his best bowling display of the season just when it was needed most, pinning the oppositions batsmen to the crease with some hostile deliveries and causing just enough panic in the batting ranks to force a run out, the opportunity gleefully accepted by Vishwa Samaranayake.

Joseph then clean bowled the new batsman and it was left to Giles White to take the final wicket, leaving him with figures of 3 for 29, when the half centurian hit him high and handsomely towards the boundary, where Daman Singh was stationed to take a magnificent diving catch.

Sports Results - Term Four Week One

WELCOME back to school for the last term of the year. Term 4 sports focuses on Junior Sport and also the wrap-up of competitions for Tennis and Cricket.

Congratulations to Nick Rebers and Leo Lines who participated in the NZ Regions Under 18 Underwater tournament over the school holidays. Their Northern A team beat the Central A team to claim a gold medal. Nick and Leo were both named in the NZ U19 training squad which is aiming to compete in a World Championship event in Spain or the Netherlands in March next year.

Tennis
Our tennis teams got off to a great start on Saturday. The Senior A Boys won a tight match 5 – 4 against top-of-the-table Western Springs. This was a great result given that Western Springs had won the previous encounter in term one 7 – 2. The Senior B Boys beat Massey 6 – 1 while the Intermediate Boys were 6 – 3 winners over Waitakere. The Senior A Girls has a clean sweep of Green Bay, winning 9 – 0. The Senior B Girls went down to Waitakere and the Intermediate Girls had a win over Rangitoto College.

Cricket
The Boys 1st XI were the only team in action this week and started their two-day match against Sacred Heart very well. Captain Sachin Variath led from the front, opening and putting together a great innings before falling just short of a 3rd consecutive century, out lbw for 97. Fellow opener Akash Anthony shared in the opening stand of nearly 150 runs and scored 53. There were also valuable contributions of 37 from Avish Sharma, 22 by Mitchell Murray and 23no by Vishwa Samaranayake. At the end of the day, Avondale College had amassed 287 for 8 declared off 96 overs and will look to defend that total next week.

Water Polo
The Junior Boys and Girls Water Polo teams got underway as well. The Junior Boys team lost their opening encounter against Liston 3 – 9, while the Junior Girls went down in a hard-fought game 5 – 6.

Volleyball
The Junior Boys Volleyball team had two games on Thursday night, winning both of them. They beat Kelston Boys two sets to nil, and also notched a win against MAGS. Two Junior Girls volleyball teams were in action on Thursday. Junior Girls White beat Green Bay 3 and Western Springs 2 – 0, while Junior Girls Black also had 2 – 0 victories over Green Bay 2 and Kelston Girls 2.

YSPOTY Awards
Five students have made the finals of the ASB Young Sports Person of the Year Award, run by College Sport Auckland. Syreeta Norris is a finalist in the All-Rounder category and our other finalists are Shannen Elliot, Cricket; Nadia Pearl, Girls Football; and Leo Lines and Nick Rebers, Under Water Hockey. The finalists will be honored at a gala dinner on Thursday 11 November. Congratulation on making the final three and good luck for the awards.

1st XI Cricket Make Solid Start

Following on from the successful tour to Australia and emphatic pre season victory over Takapuna Grammar School, the second half of the Auckland Secondary Schools 1A Cricket competition began on Saturday.

First up for our boys were Sacred Heart College at their campus in Glendowie. Captain, Sachin Variath, won the toss and elected to bat with Mr Smith’s orders ringing in his ears that the team were to bat all day, and bat all day they did. The captain led from the front, following on from his last two innings in New Zealand of 261 not out and 154 not out with a steady display of sound defence and occasional aggression.

Unfortunately for Sachin he fell on 97 runs, given LBW while attempting to sweep his way to a third consecutive century; however his near 150 run partnership with vice captain, Akash Anthony, who chipped in with 53, had set a good platform for some more aggressive stroke play down the order. There were valuable contributions of 37 from Avish Sharma, 22 by Mitchell Murray and 23 not out by Vishwa Samaranayake, which took the team to 287 for 8 declared, off 96 overs.

The second day of this match looks likely to be very competitive, with Sacred Heart sure to attempt to gain a first innings lead and Avondale determined to bowl and field well in order to secure victory.

We won our semi-final against Marlborough College 3-1 with Melissa Tebay scoring a hat-trick ( A header, a volley and a freekick)

We have a great group of girl's and the defeat in the 1/4 was heartbreaking especially for it to be decided on penalties. (0-0 at full time)

Avondale Premier Girls take fifth place in Auckland after beating Baradene College on Saturday

Sports Report: Week 5

Basketball.
It was a fantastic week for our basketball teams. All four teams progressed through the semi-final pool plays for the top eight team in greater Auckland to make it to the semi-finals this Friday. This means that we have four teams in the eight finals.
North Shore Events Centre on Friday 27th August

Basketball Premier - Premier Boys
Avondale plays Auck Grammar 7:30pm

Underwater Hockey
The Juniors won their 2nd/3rd place semi final game against Howick 3 - 2.  We were ceded 3rd after the winter season league. It was very close and they only won because a goal that Howick scored as the buzzer went was disallowed.  The goals were scored by James Law (2) and Lex Doesburg (1).  This means Avondale will be playing MAGS in the Auckland Secondary Schools Junior Final, Tuesday 24 August at 6:30p.m. at Diocesan.

The Seniors won their semi final game against Glendowie College 3 - 1.  This means they will be playing at 8:35p.m. at Manurewa next week.

This is a fantastic result for the Avondale Underwater Hockey Teams. We only have two teams (senior & junior) in the Auckland Secondary Schools Competition and both have made it to the final.
Both teams also qualified for the National Secondary Schools Finals and are off to Rotorua next week. This is also quite an outstanding feat to have both teams in the Nationals. This is for the top 12 teams in New Zealand.

Football
Year 10 Boys
Great win for the boys on Saturday. A battling, organised display against Sacred Heart who went into the game unbeaten in 17 games this season. Jibril Ahmed scored the winner with a fine headed goal mid-way through the first half. Solid displays from the rest of the team, including goalkeeper Jacob Smith, saw the team complete the victory.
1st X1 Boys Football had a loss 1-3  against Glendowie. The boys played well but were let down by individual mistakes and poor finishing. Goal scorer and player of the day was Taigh  Stodart.

Hockey
The girls' 2nd X1 Hockey game after school on Friday was more like under-water hockey, than the game as we know it. We had a good time though and Bevan was brilliant, as usual, umpiring with me. It ended in a nil-all draw and Tatiana Tavleev was the player of the day ( a first-timer to hockey this year but with loads of heart and commitment). One game to go....

Under 15 Boys
5-0 Win v Pakuranga ( Mitchell Murray 2, Ben Wu 2, Sam Killip 1)
One more match v Mt Roskill in week 8 – our team are currently equal top for Championship Play offs

Bollywood Dancers
You will be pleased to note that Shrestha Maiti of 10HTN was awarded the BEST FEMALE DANCER of the night. We have held the title: BEST MALE/FEMALE DANCER for two years in a row.
We competed against 21 schools each with a unique theme and techniques and I know without a doubt that this year's performance was full of hard work and dedication all culminated with a full blown performance at the Logan Campbell Centre.  Avondale College was well represented and we all felt like winners at the end.

DANCERS:
Shrestha Maiti, Ashley Deo, Divya Patel, Nayla Hossain, Kavita Goundar, Lajja Prajapati, Roopesh Vanamala, Shanil Varma.

Netball
Premier 1 Team
Last Saturday we played Baradene College for 5th and 6th place in the Auckland Secondary Schools League Championships at the AMI Stadium. In a very close game Avondale came out on top by just the one goal, winning 41 – 40 and so finished 5th in Auckland.  The Upper North Island Tournament is on next week and we have drawn Baradene again in the very first game. This will be a must win game if we are to make the top two teams in our pool and qualify for the top eight teams and a chance to go to Nationals.
Junior Netball
Well the season has come to an end. After an unbeaten season, 9B lost to Western Springs Gold in the Final. They played well but the pressure of the final got to them and they lost 15-19. The final score doesn't really do the game justice as at the end of the third quarter, they were all square at 10-10 (our girls only let Western Springs score one goal in that quarter!).
The whole team deserves a mention and a huge thanks must go to their Y11 coaches - Erika Lovey Kumar (first half of the season) and Zebalda Kepu and Victoria Salanoa (second half of the season).
Senior D – Had a great season and made it all the way to the final but lost narrowly to Western Springs.
Senior A Netball are in the final of the Senior A grade for Netball Waitakere - playing off for the top spot Tuesday at 5.25pm, Court 1 in the Te Pai Centre on Lincoln Rd.
2nd XV battle it out against Tamaki College in the Auckland final, 21/08/10

Sports Results - Week Five

Rugby Union
The 1st XV are the 1B Plate Champions after a tight 11-8 extra-time victory against Waitakere College. Our boys held the lead right up until the final minutes when Waitakere scored, forcing the game into extra time. However, Mason Lino calmly landed a penalty goal to secure victory. In other semi-finals, the 5th Grade went down 12-5 to Botany Downs and the Under 15s lost 24-23 to St Pauls. Roderick Jeremia, Jake Kamuhemu, Ofa Halaholo and Shadrach Vaa had great games. The Under 14s lost 32-5 to Otahuhu.

Basketball
The Premier Boys lost 98-69 to Onehunga, with Dylan Love rebounding very well. The team will face Auckland Grammar in the semi-finals of the Premier League. The Premier Girls lost 83-42 to Auckland Girls. The Under 17 Girls, Under 17 Boys and Under 15 Girls are competing in the Greater Auckland Basketball Championships this week on the North Shore and at Trusts Stadium.

Girls Football
The 1st XI won their semi-final 2-1 against Diocesan, with Jasmine Pereira scoring two goals. The team will play Mt Albert Grammar in the final this week. The 2nd XI won 1-0 against St Dominics, with Isabelle Grey player of the day. The 3rd XI won 3-0 against St Dominics but lost 1-0 to Waitakere, while the 4th XI lost 2-0, also to St Dominics. Claudia West, Nicole McMillan, Celeste Smith and Eunice Ng all played well for the Junior A Girls in their 2-0 loss to Diocesan.

Boys Football
The 1st XI lost 3-0 to Macleans, with Tom Burden named player of the day. The 2nd XI lost 4-2 to Northcote, with Gian Pimental playing well. The 3rd XI lost to St Peters whilst the 4th XI drew with Kingsway. Year 10 Boys lost 5-2 to Westlake Boys and the Year 9 Boys played out a nil-all draw with Sacred Heart.

Hockey
The Under 15 Boys drew 2-all with Sacred Heart, with Mitchell Murray and Ben Wu scoring goals. The Open A Girls won 2-0 against St Marys, with Talia Vaavale player of the day. Karen Gudsell played well in the Open B Girls 2-1 loss to Pakuranga, while the Under 15 Girls defeated Otahuhu 1-0. Bonita Wong, Kate Emberson and Stacey Purdon all played well.

Netball
The Premier One team had a huge 42-16 win over Massey, but lost against Epsom Girls and Diocesan. The Premier Two team lost a high-scoring match 46-32 against St Dominics whilst Victoria Salanoa was player of the day in the Senior A win against Lynfield. The Senior B team lost 31-16 to Western Springs, whilst the Junior Premier team narrowly lost 24-19 to Lynfield. However it was a great week for junior netball, with all four teams winning. The Year 9A and Year 9B teams defeated Massey and Kelston respectively. Tayla Koria and Faith Silipa played well. The Year 10A and Year 10B teams both defeated teams from Massey. Amira Goodenough, Monika Forster, Jessica Vilisoni and Shloka Salunke were the star players.

Underwater Hockey
The Juniors had a huge 7-0 win over Howick B, whilst the Seniors defeated Mt Albert and Howick. Both teams are playing in the Auckland semi-finals this week, a great achievement for the school.

Lacrosse Champions

Congratulations to our Premier Girls Lacrosse team who not only won the Auckland Championships, but also took home the cup from Friday's one day tournament.

Sports Results - Week Four

It was a very successful week on the sporting front last week, with some outstanding results in several sports.

Lacrosse
The Division One team won the Auckland Lacrosse Championships for the fourth consecutive week last Friday. After a nervous start, the girls hit top form when it mattered, winning their semi final 12-1 against Epsom Girls, before defeating Auckland Girls 7-1 in the final. Marina Samountry was named goal keeper of the tournament and Anna Curtis was top goal scorer of the tournament.

Former Avcol Student is Newest Silver Fern

Grace Rasmussen

Congratulations to former Avondale College student Grace Rasmussen who has been named as part of the Silver Ferns squad announced for the Commonwealth Games and New World International series in Auckland.

Twenty-two-year-old Grace Rasmussen has been added to the national squad after her slick midcourt display with the Northern Mystics in the ANZ Championship impressed selectors.
Competent in the goal or wing attack position, Rasmussen, younger sister of the Central Pulse's Rachel Rasmussen (also a former Avondale student), has made the step up to the national team after travelling with the squad to England as a training partner in 2009.

We wish her well!

Our Soccer Star

After nearly five years of playing football for Avondale College, Prefect Nadia Pearl is well used to playing in black and white. However, this month the 17 year old has swapped the Avondale crest for the New Zealand silver fern as she represents her country at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

This is the second time Nadia has played for a national team: last year she was selected for the national U17 team for the FIFA competition hosted by New Zealand. This year it means travelling to Germany where the NZ Junior Football Ferns are playing matches against Sweden, North Korea and Brazil before progressing, Nadia hopes, to the quarter finals and beyond…

Nadia began playing soccer as a seven year old after watching her brother play. “I think Dad encouraged me because I wasn’t too good at ballet” she laughs. After ten years and much hard work, she currently plays for her club, Three Kings United as well as the NZ Football Ferns.

Having gained her NCEA Level Three qualifications last year while in Year 12 has certainly enabled Nadia to focus on her football this year. She estimates that she currently trains between 15 to 20 hours a week – “so there’s not much time for homework!”

Nadia is hopeful of gaining a scholarship to an American university where the football pro and semi-pro leagues present opportunities not currently on offer in New Zealand.

She is looking forward to rejoining the Avondale College 1st XI team next term once her World Cup commitments have lessened

Y10 Sports Academy Visit the Millenium Institute

Over 40 Avondale College students got to experience what it is like to be an elite athlete when they visited the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health this week. The group experienced a VO2 Max test in the AUT laboratory, as well as undergoing a sprint/agility session and using the rock climbing wall.

Above all the students got to mingle with top athletes, including the South African Netball Squad, and a few Auckland Blues and Black Sticks players, all of whom were there to train. The students represented the College perfectly and enjoyed the sumptuous facilities available. It was the first time many of our students had experienced a high performance facility and they were amazed by the ten lane, 50 metre swimming pool, the size and scope of the main Indoor arena and the athletics stadium.

It was without doubt a worthwhile experience, one which the students will not forget and we hope that it will inspire them to go on and achieve at the highest level in sport.

Paul Smith (TIC Sports Academy)

“On Friday the 18th June our Year 10 Sports Academy group went to the Millennium Institute of Sport. We learnt about the Institute and the effect it has on New Zealand Athletes. We also did a range of activities and learned about VO2Max testing and the science behind performance. Everybody enjoyed the day a lot and I learnt a great deal about top athletes and how hard they train.”

The mixed team came 3rd in the plate final, the girls team came 2 nd in the plate final and our boys came 1st in their plate final.

Special note must be made of the boys team which consisted of four Year 10 students and one Year 11 student. The boys were real contenders throughout the day and we look forward to some good results at the end of the year when these boys compete in the junior regatta.

The senior regatta targets Years 11- 13 students so our boys team represented the school really well on the day and this achievement was acknowledged by many of the other competing schools.

Special thanks go out to all the teachers, coaches and managers who have supported these students throughout their campaign: Mrs Taka-Brown TIC girls teams, Mr J Anderson TIC boys and mixed teams, Adele Anderson Head Coach for the boys and mixed teams, Mr J Rogers and Mrs J Crawford for their supervision and support at training and the transportation of students to and from the training sessions.

Sports Academy Leading the Way

Mark Van Tilberg is a Year 9 student at Avondale College and a member of the Sports Academy. A young cricketer of immense potential, he scored an unbeaten 120 against Auckland Grammar School last week and remains 66 not out versus Takapuna Grammar School. Mark could well complete an amazing couple of weeks after scoring another unbeaten century for his club Surburbs - New Lynn.

2010 is an exciting year for the Avondale College Sports Academy, its High Performance Sports Programme, as it has expanded to encompass Year 9 and 10 students. The philosophy of the Sports Academy is to nurture the talent of young students like Mark Van Tilberg, giving them the opportunity and environment to excel, both on the sports field and in the classroom.

The Year 9’s enjoy early morning coaching sessions covering six major team sports at the College. These are Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball and Rugby. They have just completed their initial fitness and skills testing and under the tutelage of experienced and highly qualified coaches are engaged in developing their skills and game understanding.

The Year 10 Academy groups follow a curriculum based programme which is a mixture of practical coaching and theory relating to Sports Performance. This programme is designed to develop an understanding and knowledge through Physical Education as well as performance. It is hoped this will inspire these students to perhaps follow a career path in the subject area through school and beyond.

All students are engaged in learning life skills through sport and this is underpinned by new initiatives, such as our Sports Ambassador visits and INSPIRE Programme.

Our Sachin Makes His Mark

Sachin was born to score runs. And, we are not just talking Tendulkar here. Sri Lankan-born 16-year-old Sachin Variath, named by his father Jerry after Indian cricket's master batsman, is making his own mark.

On Saturday, Variath scored 261 runs for the Avondale College first X1 he leads in the premier two-day plate competition for Auckland secondary schools. Only Bert Sutcliffe, another left-hander and regarded as among the best of New Zealand's batsmen, has scored more schoolboy runs. In 1942, playing for Takapuna Grammar School, Sutcliffe scored a record 268. Martin Crowe, another New Zealand batting star, came close with 247 for Auckland Grammar against Grafton in the Auckland senior competition.

Variath was born in Sri Lanka and came to New Zealand with his family eight years ago "for a fresh start". His big innings helped his Avondale side to a commanding 419-8. But it wasn't a display of big-hitting flashy batting. Included in his 261 not out were only 30 fours and two sixes, but plenty of singles, twos and the occasional three.

The serene setting at the college is a far cry from his birthplace where, as a three-year-old, he had a bat thrust into his hands. He quickly lost interest in the game and did not take it seriously until he arrived in his adopted homeland by which time he had switched from batting right-handed to left.

He played initially at Suburbs New Lynn and still retains strong links with the club. He scored his previous best, 110, for its under-15 side. "Some time after I was born my dad said 'you have to get a triple hundred like Tendulkar'," he said yesterday. "I came close on Saturday, but as we have to declare after the first day I have no chance to go on this week." He has never met his namesake, but says Sachin Tendulkar is "a cricketing god and I would love to have that chance some day".

Coached at his club by Kit Perera and by Matt Horne and Mark O'Donnell in Auckland academies, Variath now has Nazeem Smith as his first X1 coach. Again, the stylish youngster could not have better. Before his arrival to teach physical education at the school last year, Smith coached the Cape Cobras in South Africa - a team which included nine South African internationals.

Athletics

We have had some great results from our athletes with five Golds, four Silvers and four Bronzes at the Auckland Champs held on the 8th and 10th of March. We had excellent support from our parents and a special thanks to those who helped with coaching, in particular Nora and Brent Curtis and Phillip and Matthew Wyatt.

Medal Winners
Oketa Afele won Intermediate Discus. She has been training hard and improved on her qualifying effort. Rebecca Wyatt came through on her last jump to be a clear winner in the Junior Triple Jump. Syreeta Norris won the Senior Javelin, one of her three events on the night.

On Monday evening Maggie Bradley and Phillip Wyatt continued to dominate the Race Walk events in Auckland with clear victories. Phillip was our individual star of the Wednesday evening events with a second place in the Senior 400m, second in the Triple Jump, fourth in the Long Jump and 5th= in the High Jump. He had to leave the High Jump pit to race in the 400m, the bar was raised while he was away and he had to continue at the new height.

Faatamalii Malolo-Lapana improved on her bronze medal from last year to come second in the Junior Girls Javelin. Hanneke Rebers was second in the Intermediate 100m and still has another year in this grade. Lotima Apolosi made a huge improvement to come third in the Intermediate Discus. Ethan Sorrell was third in the High Jump and was our first competitor in the Hurdles for some time where he finished fourth. Luke Ioane is one of our most consistent performers and gained another Bronze Medal in the Intermediate Javelin. Tini Toala also gained a Bronze in the Junior Javelin.

In all, 52 athletes from Avondale made it through to these finals. There were many other excellent performances. Elizabeth Hurrell showed great promise to finish 4th in the Junior Girls 100m and 6th in the 200m. She also anchored the Junior Girls relay team which finished 4th. Also close to gaining medals were Milan Pickering and Moses McGreal who both gained 4th places in their Javelin events. In 5th place were Shontelle Makaea in the Senior Girls 100m and Hope Curtis in the Intermediate High Jump. Teklay Zinaw has continued to improve on each performance with his 6th place in the Intermediate Boys 3000m and 8th in the 1500m. Andrew Liese and Syreeta Norris both placed 6th in their Triple Jump events.

Relays
We were delighted to have teams in 8 out of the 10 relay events held at the end of the Championships. Our best results were 4th in the Junior Girls 4x100, 5th in the Intermediate Girls 4x400 and 6th in theIntermediate Boys 4x400. Although some of our runners were quite inexperienced in racing over 400m they put in some excellent performances and gave their all for the team. Particularly worthy of mention were Crystal McDougal,Giovanni Mamea Suafa, Cynthia Karikala and Immanuel Gopal.

Thanks to the staff who managed the team on the qualifying days and the finals: Ms A Giborees, Ms H McLeod, Dr T Brown, Mr G Haigh and Mr P Jamieson.

Coached by Mr N Smith. They began their season early in mid-January with a Twenty-20 Invitation Tournament at Westlake Boys, where they had a great result against Rosmini College. The highlight of the season was the win against Auckland Grammar 1st XI, something that has not been achieved since Martin Guptill (Black Caps) played for Avondale College.

1st XI Girls
The Girls’ cricket team have had a great start to the 2010 season. The team is captained by Tori Higgs, with the support of a number of Year 13 players. The team has been playing in the Auckland Premier League, and to date is unbeaten in that competition. The best win was over Epsom Girls Grammar – a very strong team who were also unbeaten.

Early in March our team competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Cricket Tournament. In their first game they beat the number one seeds, Westlake Girls. They went on to finish 2nd in the preliminary rounds, only losing to Epsom Girls.

In the last week of term the girls played against Diocesan in the Auckland Secondary Schools Girls Cricket Semi- Final. They won the toss and put Diocesan in to bat. In the first over Julia Vito took a wicket; the team ended up taking 4 wickets in the first 4 overs. It was a 40 over game. Diocesan lasted 12 and a half overs before they were bowled out for 62 runs. Avondale then scored the required 63 runs from 17 overs, with the loss of 1 wicket. Shannen Elliott scored 31 and Tori Higgs 20. A win by 9 wickets.

As a result of this win the team now qualify for the Auckland Secondary School Final and will also play in the New Zealand Secondary Schools National Tournament, competing against the top 8 school sides in NZ. This will be in Taupo at the end of Term 4.

Top batters in the team are Shannen Elliott (top score 65) Julia Vito (top score 53) and Tori Higgs (top score 44). Top bowlers are Tori Higgs, Shannen Elliott and Amy Dalzell.

Year 9 Boys Team
This team has been quite outstanding, They have had convincing wins over Takapuna Grammar and Auckland Grammar, with Mark van Tilburg scoring 120 runs not out against Auckland Grammar.

Year 10 Boys Team
A highlight of the season was an outright win against Kings College, with the team beating Kings by 61 runs. It was a solid effort by all players with Punit Patel top scoring with 23 and a team score of 160 off 25 overs. The man-of-the-match performance was 5 wickets for 20 runs off 4.1 overs by Andrew Glubb. Andrew gets to keep the match ball.

Congratulations to the following boys who made the U15 Western Distruicts Cricket Squad 2010:

Boys
The Boys Premier Softball Team have shown great results for the current season. Coached by Mr A Shao and assisted by Mr Chris Hawkes and Mr Bill Ryan, our team finished 2nd in Auckland and qualified for the New Zealand Secondary School Nationals to be held in Hastings. The team has had some very close games but has recorded wins over Massey High, Mt Albert Grammar and St Peters. They also qualified second for the one day tournament of Division One Softball, just narrowly losing by one run in extra innings.

Qualifying for Division One has been a long time coming for the Premier Boys Softball Team.

The notable players are: Jonathan Owens for his relentless pitching, AaronTohovaka, Paul Hawks and Luke Hawks for the strong hitting, Matthew Warner for his consistent catching and throwing out runners, and the rest of the Avondale team for their hard work. They are all truly a team of one.

In the last week of the term the Boys Softball Team played the final game of their Auckland Premier Competition against Green Bay HIgh School. Our team required a win or draw to claim the Auckland Title. The team rose to the occasion and won 14 - 3. The team is now the Auckland Premier Title holder.
