Sports Academy Intermediate Football Tournament
On 21st March 2012 the inaugural Sports Academy Intermediate Football Tournament will be held at Avondale College.
The concept is to encourage a number of our contributing intermediate schools to participate in a tournament at the College prior to their own AIMS Tournaments. We already are establishing closer links with a number of schools, including Avondale Intermediate, Glen Eden, Blockhouse Bay and Rangeview. All these schools are either running or starting up some form of Sports Academy. By offering playing opportunities, Sports Academy student coaching and workshops it is hoped the links become even stronger.
Neil Sykes, the Football Academy Coach has initiated this exciting event, where our students will organise, administer and referee the games. If successful we may well look to establish a multi sport Tournament.
Jasmine selected for NZ U17 women´s tour
Year 11 Sports Academy student Jasmine Pereira has recently been selected to tour Argentina with the U17 Women's Football Squad.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Jasmine to further her football ambitions and experience,” says New Zealand coach Pal Temple.
Jasmine first played for the U17 Women's team last year as a Year 10 student when she was instrumental in helping the New Zealand team beat their Australian counterparts in a three match series.
Jasmine has proven that ability, dedication and attitude are the key to success.

Sports Academy's ValuesA Champions Day Out
The weather and the hockey put on a stunning show for the Sports Academy hockey group at the Champions Trophy.
We witnessed the best eight teams in the world ply their trade to the maximum. 28 goals were scored with the highlight being the Blacksticks' draw with the Netherlands seeing them through to the top 4 play offs.
The students witnessed the pace and skills of these players up close and personal. Hockey has come along way with innovations such as auto pass, no offside and rolling substitutions making it one of the fastest ball sports around. We also saw decisions being contested via the third umpire TV replays.
The group commented on several aspects of the games, showing their developing understanding of the game, especially that these teams train like we do, focusing of basic skill sets and of course the physical demands of modern hockey, as well as saying perhaps I should coach the GB Team!!!
It was just a spectacular day.
Results:
Great Britain 1 Spain 8
Germany 3 Korea 3
Australia 6 Pakistan 1
New Zealand 3 Netherlands 3

Player of the Tournament: Tusi Eti
It has been a busy few weeks for two of our young Sports Academy students, footballer Jasmine Pereira, and rugby player Tusi Eti. Jasmine has been part of the successful Young Ferns squad who beat Australia in their recent three-match series. A highlight for Jasmine was scoring the match-winning goal in the opening victory at North Harbour Stadium. AUCKLAND – New Zealand’s U-17 women have beaten their Australian counterparts 2-1 in the first of three internationals at a rain-soaked North Harbour Stadium football turf on Monday night.
Fourteen-year-old Martine Puketapu nodded in a 13th minute corner and Jasmine Pereira doubled the lead with a well-taken low shot on the half hour mark after Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Emma Fletcher wriggled free of two defenders and had a blistering shot palmed away by the Australian goalkeeper.

Psychological Methods and Mental Skill PerformanceHockey hitting the mark at Avondale College
The future of hockey at Avondale College is looking bright as the impact of the high performance Sports Academy programme begins to make itself felt.
Hockey coach and Teacher in Charge of the Sports Academy, Paul Smith, is excited about the progress being made by young hockey players at the College. He points out the Academy sets a platform for exceptional performance through a dual focus on great coaching as well as sports theory and education.
Says Smith, “In contrast to some other Academies, we don’t just run the kids ragged on the field – they are doing theory as well, with Year 10 students doing NCEA credits early through the Physical Education curriculum.” In addition, the students participate in motivational sessions with SPARC sports ambassadors and have the opportunity to visit and train at the Millenium Instutute of Sport and Health.
It’s a High Performance attitude that seems be getting through to the students. Says Year 10 Academy student Rushlee Pearce, “I joined the Sports Academy to improve and perfect my skills. It has taught me that to be a top athlete you need hard work and dedication.”
This focused approach is clearly paying off. Paul Smith’s Under-15 boys hockey team, which is mostly made up of Sports Academy students, currently ranks third in their Auckland A grade competition. They are more than holding their own against the other top private schools in the upper ranks of the competition, and are the only side to have drawn with favorites Kings College. Four of these junior students also play for the Premier team, and will be travelling to the national tournament later this term.
One member of this junior team is Academy student, Mitchell Murray. Mitchell is also currently playing for the Auckland U15 team, and his older brother, Jake, has just returned from captaining the Auckland U18s to a gold medal victory in the U18 national competition. Both boys have been identified by Hockey New Zealand as future Blacksticks, and have been given specialised programme of fitness skills and nutrition to help them achieve their potential.
Jake also plays for the Avondale College Premier team. Coached by Bevan Jones, this team is also doing well in the Auckland competition. They were promoted to the A-Grade last year, and narrowly missed out on a top four finish this season.
With the Sports Academy hockey programme only in its second year of development, the future looks bright for Avondale hockey. Says Smith, himself a former England representative and currently the Assistant Coach for the North Harbour NHL women’s squad, “These kids want to be there. You really push them hard and you see the positive results you get from that. I’m loving it.”
Trials for the 2012 Sports Academy intake will be held on November 4 2011. To apply for the six codes on offer (basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball and rugby), contact Mr Paul Smith: smp@avcol.school.nz
10SPC - Honoring the Team!
Self Management Strategies – Honouring Yourself and the Team
Shared Values
One of the catalysts for effective team behaviour is trust. Trust between team members comes from believing in the same things (only the things relevant to the team performing so you don’t have all support the same football team, unless you’re in one!), that means for instance, if the team requires that for a period you all have to put in long hours to get a project completed, you all believe that the value of meeting those deadlines and obligations is non-negotiable. Teams with a strong sense of shared values use their behaviour to set standards.

In Term 3 the 10SPC Students will undertake NCEA Credits through the Sports Academy programme. They will potentially earn 3 Credits (and 3 Literacy) through NCEA Achievement Standard 1.9
The standard is designed to enable and indeed empower the student athletes in overcoming barriers to performance achievement. It will be monitored and assessed through the Sports Academy Coaching programme for 6 weeks.
The Powerpoint is an exemplar of what the students need to think about , in terms of aspects of their life habits that can be changed in order to perform at their very best.

Sports Academy Brochure 2012"It was a game of two halves"
The Sports Academy farewells Mr Ian Shaw. He has been the Sports Academy Football Coach since the inception of the Sports Academy in 2008.
His contribution, both on the training field and in the class room has been immense. The students who have been under his tutelage have gained a huge amount of knowledge about the game of football and what it takes to achieve at the highest level.
Whilst his departure leaves a void, he has established a philosophy and regime within the Sports Academy that will undoubtedly impact on Avondale College Football and its students in the future.
On a personal note as TIC Sports Academy I would like to extend my thanks to Mr. Shaw for his committed and passionate approach to his role.
Mr Shaw and his family are moving back to his native home in the north west of England. He will be sorely missed and the Sports Academy wishes him and his family every success in their next adventure.

History Being Made
The 2011 visit to the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health saw our Year 10 Sports Academy students undertake an AUT VO2Max test, a speed/agility training session, work on the rock wall and a water safety session in the pool.
What a pleasure it was to see this group of aspiring, committed sports students rise to the occasion and enjoy using the high performance facilities and mentoring on offer. They all demonstrated the attitudes and values that we are nurturing within the Sports Academy.
The students were simply amazing, engaging as a cohesive group in all activities, supporting the VO2 Max runners (see results below), working as a team in the pool and rock wall as well as competing in the sprints.
The water safety session was a great success with the students coming away with knowledge and techniques for water survival as well as enjoying what was at times hilarity.
All of this was achieved in a wonderful environment of High Performance , with numerous Breakers, Black Sticks and International athletes going about their daily training routines. What an opportunity for these young students.
Avondale College Sports Academy was very proud of the behaviour and attitude of these students. What a day, what an opportunity and what a wonderful group of Avondale College students.
Thanks must also go to the M.I.S.H staff (who were also very complimentary about our students), to Mr. Healey, Mr. Shaw and Mr. Jones for their enthusiastic support of this venture.

Goalsetting PowerPointChasing your dreams - the journey begins
Samantha Warriner (Olympic triathlete and current International Iron Woman) started her journey 20 years ago. Today she stood before a group of Sports Academy students as a world champion, Olympic athlete and the current New Zealand Iron Man Champion about to go to World Champs.
The focus of the workshop was on the journey to success, or process, not the outcome. As with any of life’s journeys it starts with a dream or aspiration that needs to be planned or mapped out. The students were taught to break their dreams down into manageable and achievable goals so that the process is not too overwhelming. They began to understand that in the life of a high performance athlete there are always roadblocks thrown in our path that need to be avoided or overcome and she shared some very useful strategies for doing so.
Sam’s Top Tips:
- Visualise you achieving your dream
- Plan now
- Hard work and talent are required to achieve
- Strategise to overcome life’s obstacles
- Organise your life
- Seek advice and support
- Balance your life
- Sacrifices need to be made
- Dedication – be the first to training and sometimes the last to leave
- And finally be honest and ask yourself -
“Did I do everything I could do today to be the best I can possibly be?”
Black Stick passes on her knowledge to the next generation
Jasmin McQuinn inspired our Sports Academy Hockey players this morning with a coaching session aimed at improving their basic skills. She encouraged these students with her skills, enthusiasm and advice.

SPARC Sports Ambassador Makes Dreams Come True
Fiona Southorn , Para-Olympian and World Champion Cyclist shared her experiences with a group of Year 10 Sports Academy studentson Friday.
She focused on dreams and goal setting, allowing the students to hold and wear her numerous World Championship medals. Fiona highlighted motivation as the key to reaching your sporting aspirations and overcoming any obstacles in your path.
All this shared experience will help these students when they come to undertake NCEA credits in self-management strategies and improving sporting performance later in the year.
A Golden Opportunity
In June 2011 the Year 10 Sports Academy will once again visit this Elite Sports Performance venue. Our students will train, undergo fitness tests and enjoy teambuilding activities alongside some of New Zealand’s top sports athletes. Such an experience can not be underestimated and it will hopefully ignite their passion for reaching their goals in sport.
A parental consent letter will be given to all students in the near future.

A Winning Diet - Sports Nutrition

A Winning Diet
In the modern world of sport, making it to the top requires commitment at many levels. These days it’s no longer sufficient to rely on fitness, talent and desire to win. No single factor can turn someone into a sporting legend – most good athletes use many tools to help them perform at their best. The right parents, the right training and the right skills are all important factors in performance.
Eating well is also part of the package. A winning diet is not just for Olympic contenders. Athletes of all ages and levels can benefit from eating well. It’s part of knowing that you are at your best, and enjoying what you are doing. That’s rewarding, whatever your level of sport.
So what is a winning diet? There is no secret formula or magic eating plan that works for everyone. Eating well is specific to you – to your special nutritional needs and to your schedule of training and competition. This booklet will help you meet the challenges.
