Avondale College is excited to announce the commencment of the Performing Arts Academy in 2011.
The programme offers Year 9 Students:
Five hours of tuition a fortnight from 7.45-8.45am (Mondays, Tuesdays and every second Wednesday).
Aimed at nurturing the talent of young performers, specialist training is given to young students in the areas of music, drama and dance.

Jazz Academy
The Jazz Academy will comprise of talented students who play one of the following instruments;

Jazz Academy students will focus on the main elements of jazz including improvisation, swing, form and structure, creativity, eras; their approaches and differences, your role in the combo, approaches to composition and arranging.
Each week the course will build on students’ ability to use these elements in group and solo situations. Performance is an important part of the course with opportunities given throughout the year. Jazz academy students will take part in at least one extra-curricular group within the Avondale College music department.
Classical Academy
Classical Academy students will take part in a programme that:
- Develops students’ ensemble skills with teacher-led rehearsals and performance opportunities as part of small and medium sized chamber groups.
- Improves students’ understanding of classical music styles through the study of performance practice and music relevant to the students’ chosen instruments.
There will be a variety of exciting performance opportunities throughout the year. All students involved in the Academy are expected to perform in Avondale College co-curricular music groups.
Dance Academy
Dance Academy students will participate in technique classes twice a week for the full year. Performances and competitions will also be a part of the Dance Academy as the focus is for students to improve and advance their performance skills.
The dance tutor will teach the NZAMD Contemporary syllabus, and an opportunity to sit NZAMD level examinations will be available to each candidate twice a year. Other dance techniques from hip-hop to jazz will also be explored with external examinations a possibility.
There will be a range of exciting performance opportunities offered throughout the year.
Drama Academy
Drama Academy students will take part in a course that develops basic acting techniques of voice, body, movement and use of space. The first semester will involve studying for and sitting the Intermediate Level Assessment for New Zealand Speech which involves;
- Giving a talk and demonstration
- Participating in a group drama
- Reading aloud from a book
- Performing an improvisation
During the second semester, students will work towards an end-of-year evening production which will involve other Performing Arts Academy students.
Drama Academy students will take part in at least one drama co-curricular activity throughout the year.
