Nathan Fa´avae - Multi-Sport World Champion Visits Academy
Nathan has been one of the best all round adventurer racers in the world and Captain of the Balance Vector – the highly successful New Zealand Adventure Racing Team. He went through his latest grueling race itinerary, which simply amazed the students.
Nathan discussed several major issues affecting sports people, including the key question “What motivates you?” He talked of his own experiences and how he adopted a “Champions Day” philosophy, the day when you don’t want to train, it’s too cold, you are tired, too busy. It’s the day when “Champions” do train, whilst your competitors don’t.
He brought out interesting ideas about how teams work, how conflicts in a team can be overcome with “Composure”. By using key words such as “cool” you can overcome any barriers to achieve a better team performance.
It was an inspiring session and the students engaged very openly with Nathan and as a result will take away a great deal.
Term Four - Special Guests
In October and November the Year 10 Sports Academy will be visited by three elite New Zealand sports stars:
Nathan Fa'avae - Multi Sports World Champion
Samantha Warriner - moving to Iron Man
Kirk Penney - NBL/ Tall Black Star

Students Inspired by Ex-Avcol Silver Fern
Grace Rasmussen has been hitting the court at Avondale College as part of a TV3 Programme. The newest Silver Fern took a coaching session with the Premier Girls squad and our Year 9 and 10 Sports Academy students. Grace was full of praise for the skills and commitment she saw, whilst our girls were treated to an opportunity to be with, talk to and be coached by Grace. At the end of the session the girls got autographs from Grace and hopefully some wonderful memories.

In Term Two our Year 10 students were engaged in producing a Sports Nutrition Booklet as part of their theory assessment. This followed a seminar from top Sports Nutritionist Dane Baker. Their task was to produce a downloadable version that our Premier Sports Coaches could take to National Tournament, to help produce peak sports performance.
One outstanding booklet was produced by Eunice Ng, Debbie Officer, Kimberley Ooi, Zachary May and James Zhu.
Sam Warriner - SPARC Ambassador Inspires Students
Avondale College's Sports Academy welcomed Sam Warriner to a workshop last Friday. Sam is one of the world’s best elite tri-athletes and is currently undergoing a change of direction in her professional life, taking on the Iron Man world.
This exclusive news was recorded by TV3 at Avondale College on the day of the workshop and was aired the following day. It was a wonderful experience for a selected group of our Year 10 Sports Academy students, who were not only treated to some very worthwhile advice from Sam but were also on the TV3 news the following day.
Sam, in an informal way, talked about her career development from an average school performer in the UK to one of the world’s best tri-athletes. She talked of “sabotage” and how we all make barriers for ourselves in training and performance. She gave some wonderful advice on “how to be your best” at any given moment and to “embrace success”, celebrating what you have worked so hard to achieve.
I hope our young athletes were inspired by Sam’s messages and that they will develop the life skills necessary to progress further. I am always in awe of the messages from current sports people who are at the top of their sports on the world stage.

Year 10 Academy Students Visit the Millenium Institute
Year 10 Sports Academy Students visit the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health
Over 40 Avondale College students got to experience what it is like to be an elite athlete when they visited the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health this week. The group experienced a VO2 Max test in the AUT laboratory, as well as undergoing a sprint/agility session and using the rock climbing wall.
Above all the students got to mingle with top athletes, including the South African Netball Squad, and a few Auckland Blues and Black Sticks players, all of whom were there to train. The students represented the College perfectly and enjoyed the sumptuous facilities available. It was the first time many of our students had experienced a high performance facility and they were amazed by the ten lane, 50 metre swimming pool, the size and scope of the main Indoor arena and the athletics stadium.
It was without doubt a worthwhile experience, one which the students will not forget and we hope that it will inspire them to go on and achieve at the highest level in sport.
Paul Smith (TIC Sports Academy)
“On Friday the 18th June our Year 10 Sports Academy group went to the Millennium Institute of Sport. We learnt about the Institute and the effect it has on New Zealand Athletes. We also did a range of activities and learned about VO2Max testing and the science behind performance. Everybody enjoyed the day a lot and I learnt a great deal about top athletes and how hard they train.”
- Party Kelly (Year 10 Sports Academy Footballer)
Tri-Athlete Sam Warriner to Visit
On Friday 25 June, SPARC Sports Ambassador Samantha Warriner will be speaking to the Year 10 Sports Academy students. In 2008 Sam won the ITU World Cup Championship, and she has her eyes on Olympic Gold... Check out her website here:

During the year the Avondale College Sports Academy will be hosting a number of top New Zealand sports athletes, including Sam Warriner (Triathlete), Danyon Loader (Swimming) and hopefully Kirk Penney (Basketball) and Jasmin McQuinn (Hockey).

We are also planning to visit the Millennium Institute of Sport and Health. This will be an activity-based educational visit for students to experience a top class elite Sports Facility and see first hand what it can offer to teams and individual athletes.
