CO-CURRICULAR THE ARTS SPORT TAUREWA CAMP GROUPS SPORTS ACADEMY PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY SPORTS ACADEMY The Avondale College Sports Academy is a high-performance programme aimed at taking our most talented junior sportsmen and sports women to the next level by nurturing their ability and moulding them into healthy, productive and talented athletes. Our philosophy is to develop a programme that not only instils the ethos of Avondale College but inspires our students to succeed in all aspects of life at the College and beyond. In addition to their specialist coaching and classroom studies, Sports Academy students are expected to further their expertise and engagement through participation in Avondale College sports teams. Many students have progressed from this level to compete in Auckland representative teams, and some to higher honours nationally. Some of our Academy graduates have even been selected to full (adult) national squads whilst still at school. The goal of the Academy is to provide students with the highest level of coaching and the highest level of competition. YEAR 9 Five mornings a fortnight (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, then Tuesday and Thursday) Sessions usually run from 7:30am to 8:45am Expert coaching by highly qualified and experienced elite coaches Practical sessions focus on developing basic skills, acquiring more advanced skills and developing game understanding YEAR 10 Building on the Year 9 programme, the Year 10 Sports Academy programme follows a curriculum pathway through Physical Education with a mixture of sports-related theory, practical application and coaching in the six Sports Academy codes. Scammers may contact you on social media, or be recommended by a friend and offer a deal where you pay them a “discounted” amount and they will then pay the full amount to the School on your behalf. INTERNATIONAL OUR PROGRAMME INTERNATIONAL ENROLMENT ARRIVAL INFORMATION STUDENT STORIES HOSTING INFORMATION CONTACT US OUR PROGRAMME Our International Programme caters for students who come for both long term and short term stays. Our school's academic focus provides a solid foundation for those who are focusing on gaining qualifications for university entrance, and our extensive co-curricular programme ensures plenty of opportunities for those who are seeking a fun cultural exchange! Regardless of whether you are planning on coming for a short or a long time, the experience will give you the opportunity to develop independence and maturity - as well as the chance to make friends from all over the world! NEW ZEALAND SCHOOL YEAR The New Zealand school year begins in January and ends in December. The academic year is broken into four ten-week terms with a two week holiday in between, and six weeks at the end of the year. ACADEMIC PROGRAMME International students are integrated into Avondale College's mainstream classes, and there are timetabled ESOL classes for those who need more support with the English language. Senior students have the opportunity of following NCEA or Cambridge qualification pathways. ACTIVITY PROGRAMME (NOVEMBER) Students who come in the second semester (July onwards) have the opportunity to take part in our two-week Avondale College Activity Programme which runs in November when domestic students are on examination leave. Activities are a mixture of school-based and out-of-school activities, such as whale watching, wind-surfing, rock-climbing and more. EXTRA TRIPS Our International Department facilitates a number of different trips during weekends and school holidays that give students the opportunity to visit some of the famous tourist attractions of our beautiful country. Communication happens in a variety of ways; the links on this page are useful ones for our families. UPDATING YOUR CONTACT DETAILS If your contact details have changed, please let us know! Download the Change of Contact Details form, and email to: datateam@avcol.school.nz HEARTBEAT NEWSLETTER Keep up to date with what is happening at Avcol. REPORTING AN ABSENCE Students should attend school every day unless they are ill. Legally, any enrolled student must attend every day and it is the responsibility of parents alongside schools to make sure they attend. Moreover, there is a strong and significant relationship between attending school and the likelihood of leaving school with qualifications to get into further education and careers. You can report your child's absence in several ways. 1. By logging in to Family Connection (FACTS) and sending an Absence Notification via the Available E-Forms menu at top left. (Preferred) 2. By emailing absences@avcol.school.nz Please state your child's name, year level, home room and reason for absence. 3. By phoning our absence line on 09 820 1071. Leave your child's name, year level, home room, and reason for their absence. A signed note must be provided for the Home Room teacher when the student returns to school. 4. By responding to absence text. If we send a text because your child is absent at the start of the day, please reply with the reason by 3:00pm. Requests for a student to be away from school for any period of time (e.g. overseas trips) must be made by the student's parents/caregivers in writing to the Principal. Each family is given an individual 7 digit code that allows them to login to the portal. Here, you can access information such as class allocations, timetable, class teachers, NCEA and Cambridge results, attendance data and more. Family accounts can also be viewed and student fees paid via our secure payment portal. Bookings for report evenings are made through this portal as well. An email will be sent with your login details. (Please note: This email will automatically go to the first parent listed on the enrolment form when our records show both parents reside together with the child.) PAYING AN ACCOUNT School-related costs will be added to the student's account and payment can be made in several ways. Online by credit or debit card through our secure payment portal via your Family Connection link By internet banking to our account at Westpac, New Lynn Branch: 03-0109-0291016-00. In the reference fields, please write your seven digit Family Code and also indicate what you are paying for (eg NETBALL or CAMP etc). By EFTPOS, cash or credit card to our school cashier (in Reception), Monday to Friday between 8:00am and 4:00pm. Login REPORT EVENINGS Avondale College reports on the progress of students each term. (These reports are also available in Family Connection under the Documents tab.) Report Evenings are held in the final week of Terms 1, 2 and 3, to allow parents the opportunity to meet with their child's teachers and to discuss their progress. To book an interview with your child's teacher, login to Family Connection, and click on 'Book a Teacher Interview'. The link will take you to a booking sheet where you can select suitable times to see your child's teachers. It is advisable to leave a gap between appointments to enable you to move to the different rooms. If one of your child's teachers is not visible on the booking sheet, this is because they are unavailable for this evening. To delete a booking you have made, just click again on the cell and the booking will clear. Please note: The 'Book a Teacher Interview' option only becomes available in the two weeks prior to the interview and closes on the Sunday before the interview date. Bookings made after the close-off date will need to made in person by your child with the form provided with the progress report. - Taurewa Camp | Avondale College
TAUREWA CAMP For many students, going on camp is one of the highlights of their Avondale College experience! We are fortunate in being able to offer students the opportunity to attend Taurewa, our outdoor education camp situated on the edge of the World Heritage Site of the Tongariro National Park. At Taurewa, students are able to participate in a great variety of outdoor activities which, depending on the season, can include tramping, rafting on the Tongariro River, rock-climbing, kayaking, ropes course, skiing, mountain biking and more. All students in Year 10 attend with their home room class, and further camps are offered to students in Years 12 and 13. The groups are accompanied by teachers and parents, and activities are led by outdoor education specialists. CO-CURRICULAR THE ARTS SPORT TAUREWA CAMP GROUPS SPORTS ACADEMY PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY INFORMATION FOR YEAR 10 CAMPS It is an expectation of Avondale College that all Year 10 students attend the Taurewa Outdoor Education Camp with their home room. Taurewa is located on the northern side of Tongariro National Park. Students will have the opportunity to be adventurous and challenged. They can mountain bike in Term 2 and ski in the winter in Term 3. Depending on the weather they will also do a variety of activities like low ropes courses, hot pools and explore some of the National Park's hidden trails and breath-taking views. As well, they get to create one of the most memorable moments in their lives, forge friendships and strengthen the ones they have. Families are welcome to begin making payments towards the full cost of camp earlier via our payment portal on Family Connection, by internet banking (using your family code and TAUREWA in the reference details) or to the College Shop.
