Chefs for Compassion put on banquet fit for kaumatua
Our Chefs for Compassion co-curricular group exists to promote kindness in practical ways, using hospitality, service and shared meals to bring people together and support those in our community.
We were honoured to host Matua Warahi and Whaea Linda with an opulent high tea at the wharekai on Saturday with some of their closest friends and whānau.
Chefs for Compassion students were moved to hear about the recent loss of their home in a fire, and wanted to find a way to show compassion for all that they may have lost when this happened. They students hoped that in gifting this event, the day gave them some time and the space, to be with friends, and to feel the support and care of the Avondale College students.
Student Sophie Waller led the décor team and photography, Tanvi Govind the kai, Harper Spurway led the liasons and the karanga alongside Ava Uhila, Som Yadav said the mihi, Jasper Davison gave a formal speech. As a memento from the day, carpentry student Joshua Grant made them a personalised chopping board for their new home.
Matua Warahi and Whaea Linda’s presence at the heart of Avondale College as kaumātua, alongside Whaea Bella, means so much to our community, and it was a privilege to share time together.
