The initiative by Amanda Hookham, Community Gardens Coordinator at EcoMatters Environment Trust in New Lynn, who has been working closely with our Environmental Group. She saw a natural opportunity to bring both groups together to connect over their shared kaupapa. The delicious soup served on

Asher's buzzing business
What began as a casual evening of online shopping on Temu has unexpectedly turned into a lucrative side hustle for Year 11 student Asher Carter. After ordering a product that arrived with a bonus set of hair clippers, Asher’s friends encouraged him to give haircutting a try. “My mates said I should attempt a haircut for a joke,” Asher recalls. “I cut my mate’s hair and didn’t do too badly, so they told me I should keep going.” Taking their advice seriously, Asher upgraded his

Avcol students honour ANZAC Day
Our senior prefects attended the service at Avondale RSA, with Head Prefects Marco Li and Lola Kelleher each delivering two heartfelt speeches. Lola shared that for many young people, the world wars feel distant. "Yet one truth brings it closer to home: many of the soldiers who landed at Gallipoli were not much older than we are today. They were young, with ambitions, families, and futures ahead of them. And still, they stepped forward into uncertainty, fear, and hardship, dr

From curiosity to confidence
Seven Avondale College tauira have spent the last few weeks immersed in a Toi Māori drawing and design course at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa in Henderson. Across two assessments, they've accrued eight NCEA credits, but their tutor, Whaea Maia Keane, says the real impact is the cultural knowledge and confidence they’ve gained. "Most of the students arrived with little experience drawing these patterns," she says, "but they’re leaving with strong foundations and a sense of pride. I t
