With just three weeks until the curtain goes up on Chicago, High School Edition, a lot of hard work is happening behind the scenes for cast and crew of the school show.
Playing one of the lead roles, that of aspiring actress Roxie Hart (played by Renee Zellweger in the movie of the musical), is Avondale College student, Eliza Gleeson.
Eliza is a seasoned performer, having danced in her first ballet recital at age five. She has sung in choirs, with rock bands and musical ensembles in venues as varied as theatres, schools, churches, town halls and retirement homes... Eliza has been in three National Youth Theatre shows, as well as playing the lead role of Fiona in Shrek Junior at Glen Eden Intermediate. Last year her band came third in the Rockshop Band Quest and also won best vocals. At Avondale College, she is a member of the Performing Arts Drama Academy, and sings with the Gospel Choir.
The role of Roxie is a big one in the show and draws on all of Eliza's performance skills.
"Roxie is a self-centred person," says Eliza. "She always dreamed of being a big performer one day and all she wants is her name in the paper."
Performing aside, Eliza says she loves all the connections that are made by being part of the school production.
"It is so amazing - you become like a little family by the end of show," she says.
Avondale's production of Chicago - High School Edition runs in Week 9 for four nights only, from Wednesday 18 September to Saturday 21 September.
"It is such a cool show," says Eliza. "Ms Stone is doing such a fantastic job at bringing words on paper to life to create a fun, dramatic show. Come and watch with friends for a great night out!"
Tickets are now on sale, from $15 to $20, with a family rate of $70, and an extra-special ten-dollar Thursday deal.
