Cyclone Gabrielle: School Closed Mon 13 & Tues 14 Feb

Kia ora koutou

I hope that you have had a restful weekend, and trust that you are safe and dry.

Having carefully considered the public safety messaging about the approach of Cyclone Gabrielle, information provided from the Ministry of Education, and the needs of our community, we have made the decision that Avondale College will be closed on Monday 13 February and Tuesday 14 February. We will continue to review the situation over the next 48 hours and communicate early Tuesday afternoon to confirm arrangements for Wednesday.

Students should continue their learning from home tomorrow, as far as they are able. They should prioritise the following:

  • review and complete classwork from last week

  • work on any set homework

  • spend some time looking through each of their class Microsoft Teams pages

  • visit our Student Hub to look through the resources/information available and complete sign up for any clubs, sports or activities that they would like to be involved in this year.

Tomorrow our teachers will endeavour to set work through Teams for Tuesday classes. Distance Learning does depend on teachers and students having access to power and an internet connection, which I realise may not be the case over the next 48 hours. I ask that students ‘do their best’ to continue with their learning whilst school is closed, and be mindful that some teachers may not be in a position to access Teams.

Any further updates over the next few days will be through email, our website and our social media channels. If you need to be in touch with your child’s Home Room Teacher, class teachers, Dean or any other staff you will find their contact details on our website.

If you, your family or your home are at immediate risk do not hesitate to contact the emergency services, and there is a great deal of advice and information on the Civil Defence websites Auckland Emergency Management | Auckland Emergency Management.

Stay home, take care, keep safe and I look forward to reconnecting with students later in the week.
