From classroom to catwalk

Seven talented Avondale College designers recently showcased their creativity and skills at New Zealand Fashion Week, as part of the Walk the Line competition.

Year 13 students Mia Archipow; Mika Gunning; Hanna Lam and Sidhi Arora; and Najya Sameer, Iris Yeh and Alicia Yeung were selected to present their original garments on the runway.

The Walk the Line competition provides emerging young designers with the opportunity to share their work in a professional fashion environment, giving students valuable insight into the fashion industry while celebrating innovation, creativity and personal expression. Run in partnership with New Zealand Fashion Week since 2011, Walk the Line is one of New Zealand's leading youth fashion events.

"Seeing designs come to life on the runway was a memorable experience and the culmination of many hours of hard work, planning and creative development," shared Mika.

For Hanna, who co-created her garment with Sidhi for the 'avant garde' category, her design mirrored a personal journey: "This garment represents moving from fear to confidence, from silence to expression. Through the gothic design, we show how fashion can be political and personal, helping us reclaim our identity and finally feel comfortable in our individuality."

Special thanks to Ms Evans-Mikellis, who supported the students throughout the application and preparation process. Her commitment to nurturing student creativity helped inspire them to put themselves forward for this unique opportunity.

Congratulations to all seven for representing Avondale College with distinction on the national stage.
