ILLUMINATE spotlights an epic year of Dance

Avcol's student dancers took to the stage at the Glen Eden Playhouse Theatre last week to showcase a year's worth of work. Featuring 41 back-to-back performances and more than 120 dancers from across all year levels, the showcase celebrated a diverse range of styles, including contemporary, K-pop, Bollywood, Cha Cha, Jazz, hip-hop, cultural dances, and performances from our award-winning soloists.
Performed under dazzling lights and accompanied by foot-tapping music, the event was made even more special by two sold-out audiences whose enthusiasm and support elevated the experience for the performers.
For our Year 13 Dance leaders Mika Gunning and Shanaya Krishna, who also MCed part of the event, it was the perfect way to wrap up their dance journeys at Avcol.
"Seeing everything finally come together on stage made all the stress and hard work worth it," shared Mika. "We're really proud of how far everyone has come and how much dance has brought us together as a team."
"The showcase was such a special experience for us as dance leaders. There's so much work that goes on behind the scenes, from creating choreography and organising practices to helping everyone feel confident in their dances," says Shanaya.
Among the most unique performances was the Gumboot Dance, a traditional South African dance with origins in the country's gold mines. Developed by Black migrant workers, the dance evolved as a form of communication using rhythmic stomps, slaps, and boot taps when speaking was restricted.
The crowd responded especially well to Midnight Munchies, a creative blend of dance and drama featuring pyjama-clad students competing over late-night snacks.
Head of Dance Miss Twentyman praised the students for delivering a seamless production.
"It's easy to underestimate the amount of work that goes into a showcase of this scale. From learning choreography and attending rehearsals to supporting one another backstage, the commitment shown by our students was exceptional. Their passion, teamwork, and professionalism really shone through in every performance."
Congratulations to all our student dancers on a spectacular showcase. You truly blew us all away!
