Over the past term, a group of our Year 9 students have been taking part in the Junior Scholars Academy, an extension programme offered across two stands: Science/Maths and Social Science/English. Students have carried out their own independent research projects with teacher and mentor guidance.

In the English/Social Science stand, students have been engaging with members of the wider community to explore the stories, experiences, and contributions that shape Avondale. They have interviewed people from local businesses, environmental organisations, and cultural groups, taking the time to research their chosen interviewees and thoughtfully craft meaningful questions. Through these interviews, students have captured the diverse voices of the Avondale community, highlighting the connections, generosity, and positive work taking place right in our own backyard.

In the Science/Maths strand, students have explored global issues and big scientific questions through independent inquiry. Following the PPDAC research cycle (Problem, Plan, Data, Analysis, Conclusion), students designed and carried out investigations into topics such as microplastics, disease modelling, and planetary habitability. Through their research, students have developed their skills in critical thinking, data analysis, problem-solving, and scientific communication.

We would love to invite parents and caregivers to come along and see what both streams have created. Students will be presenting their research on poster boards, with models and demonstrations where appropriate, and would love the opportunity to talk you through their work and answer any questions you might have.
