Simply stunning: Sound in Colour

From award-winning jazz musicians and accomplished soloists to choir performances and emerging young talent, our Sound in Colour showcase promises an evening of outstanding classical music when it returns to Avondale College next week.

The annual music showcase will feature performances from a wide range of student ensembles, including the Gospel Choir, which has recently been selected to perform prestigious Upper North Island Cadenza competition; the multi-award-winning jazz combo Swing 46; and pianist Louis de Blaisio, who recently won the Lewis Eady National Junior Piano Competition, qualifying him to compete in Vietnam.

Amadeia D'Souza (Year 12), a vocalist, clarinet and saxophone player, says she's really looking forward to performing Orange Coloured Sky by Milton Delugg and Willie Stein, Strasbourg/St. Denis by Roy Hargrove, Doodlin' by Horace Silver, and Lady Bird by Tadd Dameron with her jazz combo. Since joining Avondale College, she's embraced a wide range of musical opportunities, performing as a vocalist in Jazz Academy and Contemporary Band: "It was at Avondale College where my music journey really started to take off," she says. "I've had opportunities to try lots of different things and learn from so many talented people."

While the evening will highlight individual performers, one of the strengths of Sound in Colour is the way it brings the wider music community together.

"Come along and support your peers. It's incredibly nerve-wracking being up on stage and we need all the support we can get," Amadeia says. "When I was in Jazz Academy, no matter how badly I thought I'd sung, there were always people cheering me on. Now it's our turn to support the younger musicians so they can enjoy performing and continue improving."

With performances spanning jazz, contemporary music, choral works and classical repertoire, Sound in Colour offers audiences the chance to experience the breadth of talent within Avondale College's music programme.

Sound in Colour takes place on Thursday 6 August at 6pm in the Avondale College Stadium. Entry is by gold coin donation, all welcome!
