Our Year 10 Sports Academy students enjoyed an exciting half-day visit to the AUT Millennium Centre this week, one of New Zealand's premier high-performance sporting facilities and the training base for many Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes.
Throughout the day, students participated in a range of practical and educational sessions designed to develop their athletic performance and their understanding of sports science. Highly trained mentors lead them in basketball exercises, long jump training, and a series of team-building challenges that tested communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Students also took part in workshops covering key aspects of athlete development, including rest and recovery, nutrition, and strategies to "explosively maximise" their workout performance.
They also got to tour the facility, seeing behind the scenes to explore the world-class training environment used by elite athletes. They saw high-performance gyms, swimming pool, rock-climbing wall, and athletics tracks, gaining valuable insight into the facilities and resources available to athletes competing at the highest level.
Visits such as this provide valuable opportunities for our students to see first-hand what it takes to perform at an elite level and to learn from environments that have helped shape some of New Zealand's top athletes!
