Sports Awards 2021

Avondale College was delighted to acknowledge the achievements of our top sports players at the special (socially distanced!) Sports Awards presentation held at school on Friday 5 November.

First on the programme saw the restarting of an old tradition for Avondale College - the presentation of rugby caps to players who have played 20 games or more for the College's 1st XV. They were followed by the presentation of BOT Scholarships to promising young athletes, trophies for summer and winter codes, and then the final special sporting awards.

The event finished with a videoed guest appearance by Avondale College's very own Olympian, weightlifter Kanah Andrews-Nahu, who gave our students an inspirational and encouraging message.

Congratulations to all students, staff and Avcol community champions who received awards at this event!

She has been the captain of the Ultimate Frisbee girls team for the past two years, and was selected for the Ultimate Frisbee U20 NZ National Training Squad. All of her coaches have noted her leadership qualities, both on and off the field and her resounding work ethic and dedication to whichever sport she happens to be playing at the time.

Kingstone Cup – Boys Best All Round Sports Record: Joshua Duffin

Josh played half-back for the 1st XV Rugby team. He is a committed sportsman who doesn't shy away from the hard mahi on the training ground, never missing a training session, whether it's basketball or rugby. On the rugby field, he is a hard tackler and a great link between the forwards and the backs. Josh played an important role for the Prem Basketball season coming on the floor as a defensive presence and a 3-point shooter. He played in the Secondary Schools Nationals 3x3 championship, joining as a late addition as a replacement for an injured player and was effective immediately. He shows effort, leadership and great communication in both his sports.

Jason Twigg Trophy- Outstanding Achievement in Girls Sports: Nuala Edmundson

Nuala is a quiet achiever who is very talented in her sport of Archery. She has qualified for international competitions, including the Oceania Champs, Trans-Tasman Challenge and Youth Worlds 2021. She excels within the domestic competition, taking out Gold in her events and setting New Zealand records. We look forward to watching Nuala’s progress in her journey in archery and we will be cheering her on from Avondale.

Jason Twigg Trophy- Outstanding Achievement in Boys Sport: Lex Revell-Lewis

Lex has represented Avondale College in both hockey and athletics. Lex has excelled in athletics and has shown future potential on the world stage. Lex is instrumental in both the 4x100m and the mixed 4x400m relays for the College. He won Gold at the Auckland Secondary School Athletics Championships in the Senior Boys 400m and Silver in the 200m, later going on to the North Island Secondary Schools Champs, where he claimed the Senior Boys 400m title. Outside of school, Lex is the NZT&F U18 400m champion, and still holds the fastest 400m time in 2021 for any U18 or U20 runner in New Zealand. We look forward to what lies ahead for Lex as the season progresses and in the coming years.
