Tongan Language Week

This year's theme for Tongan Language Week, “Ko 'etau hiva, ko e fe'unu mahu'inga ia ki he mo'ui 'a e Tonga” / “Our music is a vital strand of our Tongan identity" was reflected throughout the week with a number of activities and performances.

The celebrations began with a special assembly on Monday, featuring an opening prayer, a speech, and a performance by the Avondale College Tongan group.

On Tuesday, students took part in a Tongan Language Kahoot during homeroom, learning new words and phrases while exploring the significance of Tongan language and culture. At lunchtime, student leaders displayed and explained traditional Tongan attire in the Atrium, helping students understand the meaning and importance behind different cultural garments.

The week concluded on Friday with students proudly wearing cultural dress and participating in a special Tongan Language Week Concert. The open air concert, held on the deck outside the main Dance classroom, featured a brass band performance as traditional treats including 'otai and keke 'isite were shared with students. This was followed by several dances and the opportunity for members of the audience to get up and dance.

Mr Uhila said this year's theme had a noticeable impact on student participation and enthusiasm.

“It really brought out the confidence in our students. This is what they love doing, singing and performing, especially in front of their peers.”

The concert served as a fitting finale to a week that celebrated not only the Tongan language but also the important role music plays in bringing people together.
