MĀORI COMMUNITY E ngā tai pari, e ngā tai timu e papaki kau ana ki te ākau ō te Whau. E ngā reo korihi me ngā reo koroki, nei ngā whakamihia ki a koutou. Nei rā ka mihi, nei rā ka mihi. At Avondale College we are proud of the successes of our Māori students, both in and out of the classroom. Our College is within the rohe of Te Kawerau a Maki, but our students originate from tribes throughout New Zealand. The focal point for Māori at Avondale is our whare, Te Puna Aroha. Te Reo Māori is usually taught in the whare, and it is also the base for our Whānau Class. This group is a multi-level Home Room Class, of students from Years 10-13. The Whānau Class meet every morning with a particular focus on promoting Māori identity, language and culture as well as encouraging links to whānau. Senior students from the Whānau Class are part of our Māori & Pasifka Student Leaders Group, who meet twice a term to discuss the successes, concerns, needs and wants of these groups of students. Students from the Leaders Group have led the organisation and planning of a number of events at school, have helped us to analyse our data for Māori & Pasifika achievement and have played a leading role in some Professional Development activities for staff. CONNECTING WITH WHANAU The College runs several events throughout the year to connect with the families of our students, these include our annual Whanau BBQ at the start of the year, and our Māori Leaders' Dinner in Term 3.
