Avcol reigns victorious at Auckland Jazz Comp

Congratulations to our outstanding Jazz students on a fantastic result at the 2026 Auckland Jazz Competition!

Avondale College was represented by seven ensembles, with an impressive collection of results: Swing 46 received Platinum, while Blue Note, Five Spot and the Avondale College Big Band were awarded Gold. Robs Dogs, 52nd Street and Birdland all received Silver.

We were also thrilled to see Max McCulloch recognised with an Outstanding Soloist Award and the prestigious Mike Walker Memorial Prize for Top Jazz Pianist.

"The key to success is lots and lots of practice, but also to have fun with it," shares Felix Wong from Swing 46. "It felt good to be in this exclusive bracket, and well deserved."

Band member Andrew Pedrezuela concurs: "It felt great to once again gain platinum this year, our hard work and many practices have paid off in the end."

These results are a wonderful reflection of the depth, commitment and musical excellence of our Jazz Programme.
