Our senior prefects attended the service at Avondale RSA, with Head Prefects Marco Li and Lola Kelleher each delivering two heartfelt speeches.

Lola shared that for many young people, the world wars feel distant. "Yet one truth brings it closer to home: many of the soldiers who landed at Gallipoli were not much older than we are today. They were young, with ambitions, families, and futures ahead of them. And still, they stepped forward into uncertainty, fear, and hardship, driven by a sense of duty to something greater than themselves."

Marco started with a quote from kiwi legend Sir Edmund Hilary. "[He] once said, 'It is not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves. This sentiment was relevant to not only himself, conquering the tallest mountain, but also the Anzacs over 100 years ago as they landed onto Gallipoli heading into an unknown abyss right in front of them. Along the beaches, across harsh seas, an uncertain future awaited them, yet they still stepped forwards, they were not without fear, but they chose to endure despite it."

Over at the Auckland Domain, four of our students performed the national anthems of Australia and New Zealand as part of the New Zealand Pacific Secondary Schools Choir.

"The fresh air woke us all up. A moment of silence was then announced so that we could pay our respects to all of the fallen, to honour there sacrifice when they served both their country," says Lily 'Uhila (Year 11), who performed alongside schoolmates Sina Tupa'i, Maddie Paeaia and Ava 'Uhila. "We were so fortunate to be a part of this opportunity to not only represent our cultures but also our school. The presence of veterans, families, and young people alike reinforced the importance of remembrance."
