"On Wednesday, while everyone was hard at work, ten representatives from our Whānau homeroom were invited down to Te Piringa by the local iwi, Te Kawerau-ā-Maki, to plant kauri trees on behalf of our school.

This initiative was launched by Te Kawerau-ā-Maki as a way to encourage rangatahi to learn about the importance of te taiao (the environment) to te ao Māori and Māori culture. As well as this, the planting of kauri trees is done in an effort to combat kauri dieback, a disease which targets the roots of the kauri tree, and in turn makes them die off. This experience was insightful to the students who went, as it provided a range of learning opportunities and life lessons."
