Principal awarded prestigious Woolf Fisher Fellowship

Avondale College is delighted to share that our Principal, Mrs Lyndy Watkinson, has been awarded a Woolf Fisher Fellowship for 2027, one of New Zealand's most prestigious honours in educational leadership.
Established in 1961, the Woolf Fisher Fellowship recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to education and who demonstrate excellence in leadership, learning and service. Fellowship recipients are selected through a rigorous nomination and assessment process and are recognised among New Zealand's most respected educational leaders.
The Fellowship includes an educational leadership programme at Harvard University, as well as opportunities to visit schools and education systems internationally, enabling recipients to bring new knowledge and insights back to New Zealand education.
Mrs Watkinson said she was both honoured and excited by the opportunity.
"I am deeply honoured to have been offered the award. I am very aware of the quality of education leaders who have received Woolf Fisher awards in the past and I have a strong sense of standing on the shoulders of giants. I am also extremely excited at the opportunity to study at Harvard University and to visit schools overseas."
The recognition comes at a time when Avondale College continues to be acknowledged for excellence in teaching and learning. In 2026, the College received the Ministry of Education's Excellence in Education Award for Quality Teaching and Instruction, and this year students have achieved exceptional success, including New Zealand and top-in-the-world academic honours.
While the Woolf Fisher Fellowship recognises individual leadership, it also reflects the culture of learning, aspiration and continuous improvement that sits at the heart of Avondale College. Through our guiding whakataukī, Kohia ngā Taikākā, and our aim of excellence, we encourage students and staff alike to pursue growth, seek out opportunities for learning, and strive to be their best.
Mrs Watkinson's leadership has been characterised by a commitment to creating opportunities for young people to thrive, supporting staff to grow, and fostering a culture where excellence is pursued not as an endpoint, but as an ongoing journey of learning and improvement.
