This term, Scholars Academy students have been inspired to think bigger and aim higher, engaging with a dynamic series of presentations from leading professionals across a diverse range of fields. From the cutting edge of Aerospace Engineering to the critical work of Environmental Law, and the precision-driven world of Dentistry, with a special focus on Prosthodontics, students have been challenged to deepen their understanding and broaden their horizons like never before.

First we welcomed Avondale College alumni Jeanette Campbell, a barrister; then Gilbert Watson, a specialist prosthodontist, who both generously shared their professional experiences, presented engaging case studies, and discussed possible academic and career pathways with students. In addition, Dr Joseph Ashby, Research Fellow from the University of Auckland, provided insight into the latest developments in aerospace engineering, inspiring students with current innovations in the field.

Senior Scholar Kabilan Manickam was particularly fascinated by the session ran by Dr Gilbert. "It was extremely informative and really sparked my interest in dentistry. We were provided with many key details and advice on how to pursue a successful career in dentistry and more importantly, how to stand out in this very competitive field."

Savindi Dissanayake also found this session particularly inspiring. “He shared perspectives that opened my eyes to the diverse and exciting pathways within medicine and dentistry. I especially loved how he used his real‑world daily routine to show what each career can look like in practice, helping us imagine the kind of lifestyle we might want in the future.”

Saswin Kugatheesan appreciated the session because it helped him understand “how roles surrounding dentistry such as how engineering weaves into this field. Gilbert also provided expert advice on what it takes to establish and successfully manage a dental clinic, highlighting the importance of both clinical experience and business skill."

While enjoying all sessions, Mahika Pathak valued the more linguistic content of the legal workshop, which had all students working together on a real case; “I felt Jeanne's workshop with us was very interactive and I really enjoyed putting myself in her shoes for an hour, experiencing how she does her job on a daily basis. I gained insight into a career path that I would never have known existed until the workshop.”

Para Patel said it was an incredible privilege to meet a rocket scientist. "This session really helped me develop my understanding in the astrophysics and aerospace engineering field of study, from a person working there in real time. The session was informative and inclusive as it involved us thinking and registering our minds to real world problems and work.”

We thank all our esteemed guests for sharing their knowledge and experience with us!
