Standing up & standing out
Last Wednesday, our Junior and Senior Contemporary Bands took to the stage at Auckland Council's SUSO (Stand Up, Stand Out) competition, showcasing their musical talents and enthusiasm in front of judges and fellow performers.
The Junior Contemporary Band performed under the name "3 Divas and The Band", while the Senior Contemporary Band adopted the name "Avondale After Hours."
Avondale After Hours impressed the audience and judges with their own rendition of Careless Whisper by George Michael. The judges particularly praised the group's harmonies and enjoyed the creative movements incorporated into the song.
Meanwhile, 3 Divas and The Band delivered an energetic performance of ABBA's classic hit Honey, Honey. The judges commented positively on the group's strong stage presence and confidence, noting how comfortable they appeared on stage. Although neither group progressed to the next round, both bands performed exceptionally well and represented the school with pride.
Singer Haylee Foster (Year 9) from 3 Divas and The Band said that participating in SUSO taught the group a lot about confidence and resilience. "We learnt how important it is to trust yourselves, your own abilities and those of our band members. The experience showed us the value of practice and teamwork. Most importantly, that growth happens when you take risks, and that stepping into new challenges can be incredibly rewarding."
