On Wednesday 26 February, 120 Level 2 Biology students headed out to Okura/Long Bay Regional Park to investigate the rocky shore and the organisms that survive there.
The intertidal zone is an area of interest to our budding biologists - not only because the upcoming internal assessment is worth 4 credits! This area of the beach experiences changing conditions every day, and the animals that live here need to be adapted for changes in salinity, air exposure and temperature. We spent the day learning about the ecology of this area and counting samples of shellfish from high-tide to low-tide. This week, 12BIO students have been demonstrating their understanding by writing a report that discusses the relationship between the environment, the animal adaptations and the patterns we see in this fascinating environment.
Many thanks particularly to Miss Cho, Mr Walsh, Ms Sinclair and Mr Creed who took time out of their busy schedules to come and help us in some sweltering conditions on the beach!
