- Bushra's creative environmental advocacy
Year 13 student Bushra Tasneem is proving that creativity and environmental advocacy go hand in hand. After winning first place in Te Whau Pathway’s photography competition earlier this year, she’s now added another accolade—third place in their T- shirt design contest. Bushra’s winning streak began when she joined the school’s Enviro Group, a decision sparked by her desire to branch out and get involved in causes she cares about. “I’d always admired what the Enviro Group stood for—raising awareness, fundraising, and taking action—but I never had friends who wanted to join,” she shared. “This year, a friend joined with me, and I’m so glad we did. I wouldn’t have known about these Te Whau opportunities otherwise.” Her award-winning photo, taken just behind her house in the Whau Pathway area, captured the reality of rising sea levels—a theme central to the competition. For the T- shirt design, in honour of World Car Free Day, Bushra incorporated the koru symbol to reflect New Zealand’s cultural connection to nature, along with a catchy slogan to encourage people to think twice about fossil fuel use. Bushra is passionate about climate change and the need for youth engagement. “Global warming is one of my biggest concerns,” she said. “It’s worrying how many people don’t seem to care about the long-term consequences of our actions. That’s why having an Enviro Group at school is so important—it helps more teens get involved.” She’s also hopeful: “I read recently that the ozone hole is finally recovering, which is proof that awareness and collective action really does lead to change.”
- Football's in the Family
L-R: Holly and Julie Davies; Sienna, Angela and Sophie Makwana Cousins Holly Davies (Year 13), Sienna Makwana (Year 13), and Sophie Makwana (Year 11) are part of Avondale College's star Football 1st XI team, who recently helped to score a triumphant 3-0 win at the Grant Jarvis Tournament in Hamilton. Paralleling their own sporting journeys, their mums - sisters Julie Davies and Angela Makwana (née Vujnovich)—were standout players in Avondale College’s top girls’ football team in the 1990s. -------------- Julie and Angela, what are your early memories involving football? Julie : Our team at Avondale was pretty special. We won nationals five years in a row and dominated the Auckland champs. We were a tight-knit group of girls who loved the game. Angela : And we had amazing coaches. Dean Low became like family—he actually came to both of our weddings and stayed in touch until he passed. How does it feel watching your daughters follow in your footsteps? Julie : It’s surreal. They’ve done what we did, and they love it just as much. Doing it together as cousins is incredibly special. Angela : We are just so proud. We're always there at the sidelines supporting them, and seeing how close they are, it reminds me of playing as a young person and the friendships we forged. Some of the girls I played with are still my best friends today. Our daughters call them “Aunties!” Girls, what’s it like playing alongside your cousins? Holly : It’s brought us so much closer. Sienna and I started together, and Sophie joined last year. It’s such a cool thing—playing with people you love being around. Sophie : I love being able to play alongside my family, in the game that makes me feel free. Tell us about the Grant Jarvis Tournament win. Holly : It was nerve-wracking! Obviously Sienna scored a hattrick, 3 goals, so we were all so happy about that. Sophie : When the final whistle blew, I was in shock. I didn’t expect that result—it felt surreal. Julie and Angela, is there a memory that stands out to you from your time in the team? Julie : Probably the first nationals, winning on site at Avondale. The opposing team had won it three years in a row and we were very intimidated. Angela : The place was totally packed. It was an absolute amazing experience then to win 1-0 on a penalty. Girls, how has growing up with "football mums" influenced you? Holly : They were always bragging about how good their team was! All the trips to Europe, and how amazing their coaches were. It makes me want to take in all these experiences as I know I'll remember them in the future. Sophie : They've always told us to do your best and have fun. But also to push ourselves —our mums are competitive! Sienna : They've won titles and now we've won titles. It’s cool just knowing we're following in their footsteps. Angela is in the middle row 2nd from left; Julie is in the front row 4th from left

- Deputy Head Librarian's 5 years of service
Joshua Tohi (Year 13) was recently celebrated at the Pasifika Celebration Evening as the only student this year honouring five years' service as a school librarian, including this year as Deputy Head Librarian. He's become a familiar face behind the scenes, organising book sales, coordinating library events, and helping students to navigate the shelves. “It’s the people and the team that have kept me here,” he shared. “Plus, who doesn’t love to pick-out free books before the book sales and have a shared lunch at the end of every year?!" His passion for reading was sparked early, thanks to his mum and aunty—both teachers—who took him to the library from a young age. Today, he’s especially enthusiastic about graphic novels and believes reading helps build empathy and understanding of the world. Not only that, he believes five years of faithful service shows employers he is reliable and has stickability: "Volunteering in the library has taught me work skills I’ll definitely put on my CV.” Library Manager Angus Johnston says the library would not be able to function without librarians like Joshua. "He is the best kind of librarian - the sort who quietly gets the job done without any fuss and is always reliable and punctual. I have enjoyed getting to know Joshua over the years and he has contributed to the wonderful sense of camaraderie in our library team which has made it such a pleasure to be a part of." Joshua recommends the role to everyone, not just for the perks, but for the chance to encourage others to expand their horizons - and opportunities - through reading.

- Top Up Together - Mental Health Awareness Week
We celebrated Mental Health Awareness Week a little earlier than the rest of the country. The theme is "Top Up Together". Having a school environment that is conducive to positive mental health is extremely important to us. Our Safe School Leaders share about the week in their own words: Samantha Dai (Year 12) Being a safe school means creating an environment where students can feel safe and comfortable enough to make special memories, have many experiences and to enjoy and make the most of their time at Avondale College. Safe school leaders take on many responsibilities such as Pink Shirt Day, Mental Health Awareness Week, supporting the guidance office and helping out international students. We want to support students that might have difficulty or are struggling to feel at home in their school as we know how difficult it is to feel a sense of belonging and we hope that everyone can find it at their time at Avondale College. Ameya Patel (Year 13) It's important to acknowledge Mental Health Awareness Week to avoid students from losing themselves in the process – especially during this time of year when exam stress starts to unfold. It’s easy to fall into the cycle of burnout or procrastination, which is why taking the time to restart, reflect, and reach out to others is vital. By prioritising our whare tapa whā, we strengthen our relationship with ourselves, and use past experiences as learning opportunities that guide us to the path on becoming our best selves. Fatima Iftikhar (Year 12) Our 'Connect' stall was to encourage building positive relationships to combat loneliness and boost emotional resilience. The 'Give' stall promoted acts of kindness and helping others, fostering purpose, a better mood, and stronger social bonds. 'Be Active' highlights physical activity to reduce stress, improve sleep, and enhance wellbeing and the 'Take Notice' stall emphasized mindfulness, helping to increase gratitude and mental clarity. Lastly, our 'Keep Learning' stall was to teach everyone what the different feelings are and how they can cope with them. Together, these actions offer practical ways to support mental health and resilience.
- Witnessing history at the Koroneihana
Earlier this term, a group of Avondale College Māori students travelled to Ngāruawāhia to take part in the annual Koroneihana celebrations. The event, held at Tūrangawaewae Marae, was a chance for our students to experience the rich traditions of Kingitanga, including kapa haka, pōwhiri, and wānanga. It was a valuable opportunity to strengthen cultural identity, connect with other rangatahi, and learn more about the history and importance of the King Movement in Aotearoa. Our students represented the kura with pride and mana, returning inspired and motivated to continue their journey in Te Ao Māori. "I really liked the experience, and it was really nice to see so many Māori people in one place for one kaupapa," says Jericho Hohaia (Year 9). "That was my first time learning about the Koroneihana and going, next time I want to go on the days of the hakari and the concerts." Kassius Mann, also Year 9, shares "I enjoyed seeing the Kuini and her hoa rangatira. I really felt her mauri. She looked great in the red chairs close to the wharenui. I wished we could have stayed and watched the kōrero longer."
- What Te Wiki o te Reo Māori means to me
What does Te Wiki o te Māori mean to you? Tēnā koutou e te whānau, I tēnei wiki, e whakanuia ana e tātou ko Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, he taonga tuku iho, he pou herenga mō tātou katoa. Hei wāhanga o tēnei kaupapa, kua uiuitia e mātou ētahi o ā tātou tauira, ahakoa he tangata whenua, he tangata tiriti hoki, kia whakapuaki mai rātou i ō rātou whakaaro mō te hiranga o tēnei wiki ki a rātou. Greetings whānau, This week we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, a treasured inheritance and a guiding foundation for us all. As part of this kaupapa, we have interviewed some of our students, both tangata whenua and tangata tiriti to share their thoughts on what this week means to them. Below are the reflections of our students, intended to inspire, uplift, and remind us all of the significance and life force of the Māori language. "Language is the life force of Māori identity – it is the garment of our thoughts, the pathway to our world." William Ogle-Parsons (Year 12) "I think that this week could be celebrated more outside of school, there is not enough exposure about all the things we can do, I think that it should be more central in media and at this point it should be public knowledge that there is a significant week coming up to celebrate Te Reo Māori." Sienna Walker (Year 12) "Te wiki o te reo Māori is really significant to our culture and preserving the language, it is about promoting our culture to other people in Aotearoa, this is a way to show that Te Ao Māori is the main culture in Aotearoa and it needs to be made known." Poppy Homan (Year 12) - pictured above "Te wiki o te reo Māori is about celebrating and revitalising our language, Te reo Māori was discouraged for so long that we lost the language in a whole generation, now we need exposure to encourage other to use and learn te reo to bring back the language to a point where it thrives. I usually celebrate by participating in the activities at kura." Harper Spurway (Year 9) - pictured above "Everything about te reo Māori is ātaahua (beautiful) and what’s most important is that it belongs to the land and the people. Te reo Māori carries the past and future and is a language that can unite Aotearoa. Reo is harmonious, expressive, passionate, and ever evolving." Maddy Fulop (Year 13) - pictured above "I think it is an opportunity to recognise the language and bring it into the spotlight, due to the past oppression it has faced, bringing it forward as a central topic gives it a chance at revitalisation and helps educate the next generation and get them involved in activities that encourage the use of te reo Māori." Matthew Cheng (Year 11) - pictured above "It's about connecting everyone, no matter where you're from, to the local culture and traditions. I was at another school overseas until a year and a half ago, so I haven't had much interaction with Māori culture. It's great that we learnt the haka in assembly this week." Zane Wilson (Year 11) - pictured above "Tēnā koutou e te whānau o Avondale College! I think this week is a chance to embrace the unique language of Aotearoa New Zealand. As a Pākehā, it feels amazing to learn more about the ways of the original people of the land. I encourage everyone to get involved."
- Te Pō Angitū - Māori Success Evening
Whānau, staff, and students gathered in the PAC yesterday for Te Pō Angitū - an evening of celebrating the excellence of our ākonga Maori. The opening waiatas set the tone for a night of reflection and recognition. Certificates of Achievement were presented to a wide range of students, acknowledging accomplishments in academic subjects, leadership roles, sports, cultural contributions, and service to the community. From top marks in te reo to outstanding commitment in kapa haka and mentoring younger peers, the diversity of success was inspiring. The evening also featured a performance by the 'Uhila family singers, weaving storytelling and song into the fabric of the celebration. Principal Mrs Watkinson, Peter Hita, Lance Waipouri-Gray, Whaea Ngarama Howell and staff members spoke with warmth and admiration, reinforcing the school’s commitment to Māori success and the importance of whānau engagement. A spontaneous haka in honour of all those who had help to serve our kura with mana, integrity and dedication broke out, rounding off a truly special evening.
