- Info for Juniors returning to school
We are looking forward to welcoming Year 9 and Year 10 students back to school on Monday 22 November. Every student must wear a mask, and supplies are available at the College Shop for purchase. Hand sanitiser will be available in every classroom, we are prioritising ventilation and desks will be separated as far as possible. KEY DATES FOR JUNIOR STUDENTS Distance Learning continues until Friday 19 November Monday 22 November Year 9 and Year 10 students return to school Friday 10 December Last day of school for students We strongly encourage all Year 9 and Year 10 students to return to school to enable them to complete the year positively with their classmates and teachers. Over the past few weeks students at school have established strong routines around mask wearing, hand sanitising and physical distancing (particularly from people that they don’t know well). It will benefit junior students greatly to experience these restrictions prior to the summer break, as we anticipate many of the requirements continuing into next year. Junior Exams will not take place. It is likely that in some subjects students will do skills based assessments, as this will provide valuable information about their current curriculum levels and help us to plan learning programmes for next year. Year 10 students will also have the opportunity to achieve Level 1 credits in a range of subject areas, which will contribute to their 2022 qualification. We previously published dates for two Teacher Only Days in November and December. We do not wish to interrupt student learning any further this year, so we have rescheduled these days to Monday 13 and Tuesday 14 December, which means the end of the school year for Year 9 and Year 10 will be on Friday 10 December. This will also create a 15 day gap between the end of classes and Christmas, therefore reducing the risk of staff or students needing to self-isolate over the holiday period. It appears very unlikely that Junior Prizegiving will be able to take place as planned. We will confirm arrangements for the presentation of Year 9 and Year 10 prizes later in the term. Please have a look at the Sway presentation below to find out more about what students can expect from their different subjects when they return. - Sports Awards 2021
Avondale College was delighted to acknowledge the achievements of our top sports players at the special (socially distanced!) Sports Awards presentation held at school on Friday 5 November. First on the programme saw the restarting of an old tradition for Avondale College - the presentation of rugby caps to players who have played 20 games or more for the College's 1st XV. They were followed by the presentation of BOT Scholarships to promising young athletes, trophies for summer and winter codes, and then the final special sporting awards. The event finished with a videoed guest appearance by Avondale College's very own Olympian, weightlifter Kanah Andrews-Nahu, who gave our students an inspirational and encouraging message. Congratulations to all students, staff and Avcol community champions who received awards at this event! For more photos of the event, see our Heartbeat Newsletter Avondale College Sports Awards 2021 BOT Scholarships: The Avondale College Board of Trustees Scholarships are presented to senior students who have already been identified as talented athletes in their sport or sports and have already performed at a high level have participated fully within and shown a commitment to the Avondale College programme. Most importantly, the award of $200 is designed to encourage them to continue to progress in their sporting education at college level and above all, help to fully develop the potential they have shown. - Important message from Principal re Covid case at Avondale College 7/11/21
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students, Late this afternoon I was notified that a student has been confirmed as having COVID-19. The person was infectious at Avondale College from Tuesday 2 November – Wednesday 3 November 2021. Over the past two weeks our students and staff have been very careful to adhere to the COVID regulations for schools, and compliance with mask wearing, regular sanitising and regular cleaning has been excellent. There has been considerably more than 72 hours since the confirmed case has been at school, therefore there is no requirement for school to close. Through an abundance of caution, Senior Students are asked to study at home tomorrow, Monday 8 November, as far as possible. Teachers will provide teaching through Distance Learning for both Junior and Senior Students. This will give us an opportunity to confirm contact tracing lists, to thoroughly clean particular areas of the school, and allow time for some staff to get tested. ‘Close contacts’ and ‘Casual Plus’ contacts have already been contacted and provided with relevant advice from Auckland Regional Public Health Service. The remainder of the school are considered ‘Casual’ contacts. Please refer to the summary of Quarantine and Management Pathways below. Senior students who need to attend school tomorrow should report to the library at 8.50am, where they will be provided with a space and support from a teacher for their Distance Learning. The student concerned did not have any classes in the area of the Cambridge Examinations. Examinations scheduled for tomorrow will proceed as normal, and students should report to E block at 12.30pm ready for the 1pm examinations. I realise that this news will be worrying. If you have any immediate health concerns please call Healthline on 0800 358 5453. Stay safe, be kind Lyndy Watkinson Principal

- Bus service info for returning to school
Update: 28/10/21 RITCHIES BUS SERVICE - Avondale College has been advised that Ritchies bus service will not be running at this time. AT Buses are in operation. A Message from Auckland Transport Kia ora, The Government has announced that secondary students in Years 11-13 will return to school on Tuesday 26 October. To make sure we have room for everyone onboard we’re resuming school bus services, adding extra carriages at peak travel times to trains, and resuming a number of ferry services. Find out more on our website What this means for bus services On Tuesday 26 October school bus services for secondary students will resume, running on a reduced timetable. School bus journeys will be added to the AT Journey Planner on Sunday 24 October, and there is a list available on our website. There are no changes planned to public bus services, but we’ll be monitoring passenger numbers to make sure there is enough space onboard and we’ll make adjustments where needed. When taking the bus: You must wear a face covering when travelling on public transport, or when waiting at a stop or station. This includes anyone aged 12 years or older travelling on school bus services. School bus services and public services need to be boarded through the rear door. On school bus services physical distancing is not required. As most of our services will stay at a weekend timetable, we recommend you plan your journey using the Journey Planner or AT Mobile App. View school bus timetables
